KB5043178 is Microsoft’s September 30, 2024 non-security preview cumulative update for Windows 11 version 24H2, bringing the operating system to build 26100.1882. It includes usability changes and fixes for input, controllers, Task Manager, screen readers, and setup. Microsoft marks the highlighted feature changes as gradual rollouts, so installing the update does not mean every feature will appear immediately.
What KB5043178 is and who it applies to
Microsoft lists KB5043178 as applying to all editions of Windows 11 version 24H2. Its release notes also say that version 24H2 targets Copilot+ PCs and devices that previously used Windows Insider 24H2 builds; that is Microsoft’s stated qualification, not a complete compatibility assessment for every PC. The release is a preview quality update, not a security update. Microsoft describes it as: “This non-security update includes quality improvements.” Microsoft’s KB5043178 release notes are dated September 30, 2024.
If earlier updates are installed, Microsoft says Windows downloads and installs only the new updates in this package.
What changes in KB5043178
Microsoft identifies the following highlighted changes as gradual rollouts. They may not be available to all users at the same time, even after installing the update.

- Energy recommendations: On devices with HDR displays, Settings can recommend turning off HDR to conserve energy. Find it under Settings > Power & battery > Energy recommendations.
- Battery notification: When the battery reaches 20% and Energy Saver is set to “Always On,” Windows displays a notification that it is helping reduce power consumption.
- Start and account switching: The account manager shows a Sign out option, and its ellipsis menu lists other users to make switching accounts easier.
- Taskbar Search: Search results can be used to share local files directly.
- Lock screen: Media controls appear in the lower center while media is playing.
- Mouse settings: Settings adds an option to turn off enhanced pointer precision and another to change scroll direction.
- Copilot Pro: After signing in to a Microsoft account, users can manage a Copilot Pro subscription under Settings > Accounts.
Fixes and quality improvements
The release notes list these fixes and other quality improvements:
- Addresses an input method editor memory leak that might occur when closing a window after a combo box has input focus.
- Addresses a problem in which WebView2 apps might fail to detect input from Xbox 360 and Bluetooth controllers.
- Fixes cases where Task Manager’s Settings page might show a white background unexpectedly, and where Task Manager might stop responding when switching from a high-contrast theme to a normal theme.
- Addresses a screen-reader issue: NVDA and other screen readers might fail to narrate all screen content in some apps running with administrator privileges.
- Fixes setup problems where selecting a Japanese or Korean keyboard could show and behave as English, and where some setup text could appear in the wrong language.
- Adds attributions for Rust open-source software components to credits.txt files.
Known issue: Roblox on Arm devices
Microsoft lists one known issue: players using Arm devices cannot download and play Roblox through the Microsoft Store on Windows. Microsoft’s stated workaround is to download Roblox directly from Roblox.com. This note concerns the Store route on Arm devices; it does not establish a broader problem with every Roblox distribution or every Arm device.

How to install KB5043178
Install through Windows Update
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Look in the Optional updates available area for KB5043178.
- Select the update and follow the prompts to download and install it.
Download from the Microsoft Update Catalog
The Microsoft Update Catalog provides standalone MSU packages. Microsoft says the latest servicing stack update (SSU) is combined with the latest cumulative update (LCU); the accompanying SSU is KB5043117, build 26100.1881. For Catalog installation, Microsoft provides DISM and PowerShell examples and separate guidance for deployment to installation media or offline images. Follow the release page’s instructions for the specific deployment method rather than treating an online installation command as interchangeable with offline servicing.
If installing the MSU files individually, Microsoft specifies this order: install KB5043080 first, then KB5043178.

Removal and rollback details
Microsoft says the WUSA /uninstall switch does not work to uninstall the combined package because it contains the SSU. The release page instead gives DISM-based removal instructions using the LCU package name. Consult those instructions before attempting removal, particularly when servicing an offline image.
Should you install this preview?
Consider KB5043178 if you need one of its documented fixes—for example, the controller input, Task Manager, screen-reader, or setup fixes. The listed interface and energy features may roll out gradually, so they are not a reason to expect an immediate change on every PC. If you play Roblox on an Arm device through the Microsoft Store, note Microsoft’s stated workaround before installing. For ordinary users, Windows Update is the simpler route; Catalog packages and Microsoft’s deployment instructions are relevant when you specifically need standalone or offline servicing.
