Install through Windows Update
- Open Settings and go to Windows Update.
- Open Advanced options, then Optional updates.
- If KB5040527 is offered for your Windows version and edition, select it and choose the option to download and install.
Download from the Microsoft Update Catalog
- Open the KB5040527 Catalog results.
- Choose the package matching your Windows release (22H2 or 23H2) and system architecture (x64 or ARM64).
- Select Download for that package, then run the downloaded installer and follow its prompts.
Confirm your Windows version and processor architecture before selecting a Catalog package; the listed variants are not interchangeable by release or architecture.

There is an important limitation for manual removal: because the combined package includes the servicing stack update, Microsoft’s documented method says the Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) /uninstall switch does not work for the combined package. For the LCU, Microsoft documents using DISM’s /Remove-Package option; first identify the package name with DISM /online /get-packages.
