K-9 Mail 5.800 was released on July 24, 2021, after a long beta period. Its most visible change was a redesigned interface and navigation; the extended development cycle also included work to restore IMAP push support after Android platform changes. The phrase “tons of new features” needs qualification: the project’s retrospective identifies the redesign as the standout change, while several features often associated with later updates arrived in K-9 Mail 6.000 in 2022.
What was K-9 Mail 5.800?
K-9 Mail 5.800 was a stable release published on July 24, 2021. It followed K-9 Mail 5.600, which the project’s blog index dates to September 2018. The gap between those stable releases helps explain the “after three years” framing, but it does not mean development stopped: the project continued through beta releases.
In its January 2022 review of 2021, the K-9 Mail project reported publishing 24 releases that year: seven stable releases and 17 beta releases. That retrospective also describes the lengthy beta period leading to 5.800.
Why did the update take so long?
A central challenge was restoring IMAP push support after changes to Android affected how it worked. The project says it published 16 additional beta versions at the start of 2021. IMAP push returned in a beta release at the end of June, followed by about a month of fixing problems reported by testers before 5.800 shipped.

IMAP push is the mechanism that lets a mail app learn about new messages without relying only on periodic checks. Its return was an important part of the release’s development story, even though the interface redesign was more immediately visible to users.
What changed for users in K-9 Mail 5.800?
A redesigned interface and navigation
The project’s retrospective calls the user-interface redesign the most visible change. Navigation was adjusted to more closely resemble that of other mobile email apps. The project said it had repeatedly observed users struggling with confusing parts of the old app, which informed the redesign. Reception was mixed: the retrospective acknowledges that not everyone liked the change.

IMAP push support returned during the beta cycle
IMAP push was restored in a beta near the end of June 2021, before the stable 5.800 release. The project’s account presents restoring it after Android platform changes as a major part of the extended work, rather than a collection of unrelated additions.
Which features belong to a later release?
Some changes associated with K-9 Mail came in version 6.000, not 5.800. The project’s April 18, 2022 release notes describe notification fixes for that later version: avoiding alerts for old unread messages when a folder syncs for the first time, removing notifications for messages already shown in the list, and restoring new-message notifications after an app restart.
