If jQuery Validation validates your other fields but skips a textarea, check four things first: the textarea has a unique name, it belongs to the form passed to .validate(), it is not excluded by the validator’s ignore setting, and it has a rule that rejects the value you are testing. For a rich-text editor such as CKEditor, also make sure its current content is copied back to the original textarea before validation.

1. Check the textarea’s name and form

jQuery Validation requires a name attribute on each field it validates, and the name must be unique within the form. An id alone is not enough. The plugin reference states: “Mandated: A name attribute is required for all input elements needing validation, and the plugin will not work without this.” See the plugin reference.

Also confirm that the textarea is inside the form whose validator you initialize. The official example puts the textarea in #commentForm and calls $("#commentForm").validate(). See the textarea example.

<form id="commentForm">
  <textarea id="comment" name="comment" required minlength="10"></textarea>
  <button type="submit">Send</button>
</form>
<script>
  $("#commentForm").validate();
</script>

Load jQuery and jquery.validate.js before the code that calls .validate(). The plugin’s setup instructions show that dependency order. See the plugin repository.

2. Check whether the textarea is being ignored

The validator’s ignore option defaults to ":hidden", which filters hidden elements out before validation. A textarea inside a hidden tab, modal, or editor wrapper may therefore be skipped even though it has rules. See the validate() options.

Inspect the textarea’s computed visibility when validation runs, and check the form’s current ignore setting. If the field is intentionally hidden but still needs validation, override the default narrowly rather than disabling the filter globally. For example:

$("#commentForm").validate({
  ignore: ":hidden:not(textarea)"
});

Use a selector suited to your UI if only a particular hidden textarea should be included. Whether a hidden field should be validated depends on the form’s behavior; a field users cannot currently see may not be appropriate to validate at that moment.

3. Match the rules to the value you want to reject

Length rules do not generally make an empty value invalid. jQuery Validation’s built-in methods, including minlength and maxlength, treat an empty value as valid unless the rule is required or equalTo. See the minlength method and the required method.

If a blank textarea must fail, add required. Add a length rule as well if you need a minimum or maximum length. For example, required minlength="10" rejects both an empty value and a value shorter than ten characters.

  • required: rejects an empty value.
  • minlength: enforces a minimum length, but normally permits an empty value.
  • maxlength: enforces a maximum length; it does not make a blank value invalid.

4. Synchronize rich-text editor content

When CKEditor or another rich-text editor manages a textarea, the visible editor and the original textarea are separate parts of the integration. Validation checks the textarea’s value. If the editor has not written its latest content back to that textarea before .valid() or submit validation runs, the validator may see an empty or outdated value.

A closed official issue describes required and minlength appearing not to work with a textarea managed by CKEditor 5. Treat this as an integration issue: verify that the editor synchronizes its current data to the original textarea before validation, and check whether the hidden original textarea is being excluded by ignore. See the CKEditor 5 issue.

5. Verify initialization and test the right validation path

Initialize the validator on the containing form after jQuery and the validation plugin load. Then test by submitting the form, or call .valid() on the intended element or form as appropriate. If a later script replaces the form element, the validator instance attached to the old element will not validate the replacement. Check the browser console for JavaScript errors that could prevent initialization.

While debugging, enable the plugin’s debug option. It prevents form submission during development and can help expose diagnostic information:

$("#commentForm").validate({
  debug: true
});

Remove or disable debug when you want normal form submission behavior. The validate() documentation describes this option.

Quick diagnostic checklist

  • Does the textarea have a non-empty, unique name?
  • Is it inside the exact form passed to .validate()?
  • Is it hidden when validation runs, and does ignore: ":hidden" exclude it?
  • Does it have required if an empty value must be rejected?
  • If a rich-text editor controls it, is the latest editor content synchronized before validation?
  • Did jQuery and jquery.validate.js load before validator initialization, and is the form element still the same one?
