Joey Porter Jr. immediately gives Dallas a cornerback with substantial outside-starting experience, but the Cowboys had not published a depth-chart assignment for him as of Oct. 3, 2026. Their posted 2026 chart is explicitly unofficial and still lists Cobie Durant and Shavon Revel Jr. at one cornerback spot and DaRon Bland and Caelen Carson at another. Treat Porter as a significant new option—not a confirmed CB1 or a confirmed replacement for any one player.
What Dallas acquired—and why the timing matters
On Sept. 30, 2026, Dallas acquired Porter from Pittsburgh for a 2027 sixth-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick. The Cowboys characterized the move as adding a high-level outside starter after injuries affected the cornerback room. Their report noted that Durant (hamstring) and Revel (knee/ankle) had appeared on the early-season injury report. Pittsburgh’s Oct. 1 transaction report confirmed the trade.
Porter brings experience that is not apparent from Dallas’s current chart: he started 41 of 47 career games through the 2025 season. That established record makes him a credible candidate for an immediate role, but it does not establish where the Cowboys will line him up or how many snaps he will play.

How Porter compares with the listed Cowboys options
| Player or group | What the available team material establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Joey Porter Jr. | Dallas described him as an outside starter; he made 41 starts in 47 career games through 2025. The Cowboys’ 2026 trade report attributes his 2025 coverage figures to NextGenStats. | His final Dallas depth-chart position, side of the field, and first-game workload were not stated in the available team materials as of Oct. 3, 2026. |
| Cobie Durant and Shavon Revel Jr. | Listed together at one cornerback spot on the Cowboys’ unofficial 2026 chart. Dallas noted that Durant and Revel had appeared on the injury report early in the season. | The chart does not settle either player’s availability for a particular game or show how the trade changes their eventual roles. |
| DaRon Bland and Caelen Carson | Bland is listed first and Carson second at the other cornerback spot on the same unofficial chart. | The posted chart does not say Porter displaces Bland, moves Carson down, or has been assigned to a particular side. |
| Ameer Speed | Appears as the next entry under the Durant/Revel line on the posted chart. | That listing alone does not establish his role in a game-day rotation or how he fits after Porter’s arrival. |
The Dallas depth-chart page labels the 2026 chart “Unofficial.” It had not been updated to place Porter in a cornerback slot when reviewed, even though he appeared on the active roster. The listing is therefore a snapshot of the previous arrangement, not evidence that Porter ranks behind the players shown. The roster and depth chart are distinct: the first reflects his active-roster status, while the second does not yet specify his assignment.

What Porter’s 2025 numbers say
The Cowboys’ Sept. 30 trade report attributes these 2025 coverage statistics to NextGenStats: 35 receptions allowed on 66 targets, 412 receiving yards allowed, no touchdowns allowed, one interception, a 66 passer rating when targeted, and -0.07 EPA per target. These are figures reported by Dallas from NextGenStats, not a new independent calculation here. They offer evidence of his recent coverage production, but without a matching set of figures for the other Dallas cornerbacks, they do not support a direct statistical ranking of the room.
Season totals vary slightly between the clubs’ accounts. The Dallas player profile reports 14 games, 51 tackles, 34 solo tackles, 14 passes defended, and one interception for Porter in 2025. Pittsburgh’s Oct. 1 transaction report says he started all 14 games he appeared in and recorded 52 tackles, 35 solo stops, and 14 passes defensed. Because the team sources differ on tackle totals, those numbers should be read with their source attached rather than combined.

- Wilson NFL Team Tailgate Football - Pittsburgh Steelers, Junior Size
The Dallas player profile’s season-by-season table lists 47 career games, 157 tackles, 31 passes defended, and three interceptions through 2025. The Cowboys’ trade story separately gives 165 career tackles in its prose. Those career tackle totals do not agree; the profile-table figure is the one used here. Neither total changes the central comparison: Porter’s 41 career starts are a clearer measure of his prior starting experience than a depth-chart slot that Dallas had not yet assigned.
Availability and the first-game question
Porter was on Pittsburgh’s Active/Physically Unable to Perform List during training camp and was activated Aug. 30. Pittsburgh’s transaction report says he was inactive for the Steelers’ first three games of 2026. Dallas reported that he practiced fully during the week of the trade, but said the speed of his arrival and a physical assessment would determine how quickly he could play. Those details leave his first-game timing open; they do not establish either that he was fully game-ready or that he would be unavailable.

The Cowboys’ own cornerback injury context adds uncertainty to the immediate lineup. Durant and Revel had been listed with injuries when Dallas completed the deal, while Porter was joining a new team after missing Pittsburgh’s first three games. Availability and role could therefore shift together from week to week. A later weekly injury report or an updated depth chart would be more informative than treating the Sept. 30 roster snapshot as a fixed lineup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Joey Porter Jr. a starter for Dallas?
Dallas presented Porter as an outside-starter addition, and his 41 starts through 2025 support calling him an experienced starter. But the Cowboys had not published a specific Dallas assignment for him by Oct. 3. The posted chart remained unofficial, did not list him, and cannot answer whether he will start ahead of Bland, share time, or take another role. Any claim naming Porter Dallas’s CB1, assigning him a particular side, or saying he has displaced a teammate goes beyond what the team materials confirm.

There is a reasonable football basis to expect Dallas to consider him for an outside role: that is how the team described the acquisition, and he has a sustained starting history. The Cowboys’ Sept. 30 story also noted defensive coordinator Christian Parker’s prior work with physically similar, tall, long-armed corners. That context may inform a projection about fit, but Dallas did not publish a coach’s direct statement specifying Porter’s assignment or technique. It should not be mistaken for a confirmed deployment plan.

What to watch for in Dallas’s next updates
- An updated depth chart: Check whether Dallas inserts Porter into one of its cornerback slots and whether the chart remains labeled unofficial.
- The weekly injury report: Durant’s, Revel’s, and Porter’s statuses will matter to the available combinations; the early-season injuries and Porter’s transition do not determine a later week’s availability.
- Game-day participation: An active designation and actual playing time are separate signals. Dallas’s trade-week comments made timing dependent on his arrival and physical assessment.
- Specific assignment language: A team-confirmed starter or side would settle questions that the current chart leaves open. Until then, distinguish a plausible outside role from a confirmed depth-chart position.
