Munster selected academy fly-half Charlie O’Shea to make his first senior competitive start against the Vodacom Bulls at Thomond Park on 3 October 2026. Veteran out-half JJ Hanrahan, named among the replacements, backed O’Shea and fellow young fly-half Tom Wood, saying: “They’re both going to have long careers.” The match was scheduled for 19:45; it had not yet been played when the selection was reported.
Why Charlie O’Shea is starting at fly-half
The 20-year-old earned the No. 10 shirt after an encouraging first senior run-in: he started and scored a try in Munster’s pre-season fixture against Leicester Tigers on 18 September, then made an 11-minute replacement appearance in the province’s United Rugby Championship opener against Glasgow. The Bulls fixture was therefore his first senior competitive start, not his first appearance in a senior Munster side.
The Irish Examiner reported on 2 October that O’Shea was one of 11 changes to the side that had lost 26–20 to Glasgow. He was named to partner scrum-half Craig Casey, with Hanrahan on the bench. That selection reflects a significant opportunity for a young player; it does not establish a lasting place in the team.
What Hanrahan said about O’Shea and Wood
Hanrahan said O’Shea and Tom Wood had both been excellent when brought into the senior environment. He pointed to their Ireland Under-20 campaigns, as well as their energy and eagerness to learn, before summing up his confidence in them: “They’re both going to have long careers.”

That is a senior teammate’s endorsement based on what he has seen, not a guarantee of future performance. Wood’s situation also differed from O’Shea’s: RTÉ reported in September 2026 that Wood had undergone shoulder surgery and was expected to miss months. That is dated availability context, not a current medical update.
How Munster helps young out-halves learn
Hanrahan described a collaborative approach to reviewing decisions. “We all just go around the computer, sit down together, talk about pictures that we see,” he said. Munster’s review process includes walkthroughs, video, written notes, images and PDFs, he explained, because players absorb information in different ways.

He also said the game’s pace had changed the development environment for younger players: “I think the whole thing is that everything is happening quicker for younger players now.” Hanrahan framed this as a change in the game, rather than a criticism of the coaching he received earlier in his career.
Who is Charlie O’Shea?
O’Shea joined Munster’s provincial academy in August 2026. Before that, he played for UCC and captained Christian Brothers College (CBC) to the Munster Schools Senior Cup title in 2025. He has also represented Ireland Under-20 and was named at No. 10 for the team’s Junior World Championship opener against England in June 2026.

Those school and age-grade milestones help explain why Munster has given him an early senior opportunity. They do not, on their own, predict how he will fare in senior competition.

Munster’s official fixtures page listed the Bulls match for Saturday, 3 October 2026, at Thomond Park, with a 19:45 kickoff and a ticket link. The Irish Examiner’s match-week report supplied the team-selection details. At the time of that report, the match was still scheduled to take place, so no result or account of O’Shea’s performance is included here.
