Short answer: In Jenny List’s 2023 trial, SerenityOS was usable and stable in QEMU, but she did not regard it as a daily driver. Ladybird showed promise, yet slow performance and crashes on demanding sites made that test no evidence it was ready for routine browsing. Those are historical, setup-specific observations—not a verdict on either project today.

What are SerenityOS and Ladybird?

SerenityOS is a desktop operating system built from scratch, with a Unix-like core and an interface deliberately inspired by 1990s productivity software. Andreas Kling started the project in 2018; its scope spans the kernel, applications and browser.

Ladybird began within SerenityOS as a small HTML viewer and developed into its own browser and engine. The project’s timeline says work began as LibHTML in June 2019, the Ladybird name was adopted in July 2022, and the browser separated from SerenityOS in September 2022. In June 2024, Kling announced a further fork and his departure as SerenityOS BDFL, leaving the OS to its maintainer group; the Ladybird Browser Initiative launched the following month.

In its July 2024 announcement, Ladybird described itself as a standards-based browser with a new engine that does not borrow code from other browser engines, and said it supported Linux, macOS and other Unix-like systems. Kling also cautioned at the time, “But it’s still very far from finished.” That describes the project in 2024, not its present release status.

What did Jenny List find in her 2023 test?

In her October 10, 2023 Hackaday column, List ran SerenityOS in QEMU rather than on physical hardware. She found the OS stable and usable in that virtual machine, while noting that a virtualized trial cannot capture the unpredictability of real hardware. She did not consider it a daily driver.

Her Ladybird experience was more mixed. Some ordinary websites rendered well; as she put it, “your everyday sites appear without any compromises.” But she also found the browser slow, and memory use grew until it crashed on all but the simplest sites. She speculated that QEMU’s default resource settings might have contributed, but did not establish that as the cause. The Octane JavaScript benchmark locked up rather than producing a score.

Those findings describe one person’s 2023 configuration. They are useful context for that trial, but cannot establish current speed, stability, hardware compatibility or readiness for everyday use.

What is known about Ladybird’s current availability?

The Ladybird FAQ lists a 2026 alpha for developers and early adopters on Linux and macOS, a 2027 beta and a 2028 stable release. These are roadmap targets, not confirmation that a release has shipped. The project information reviewed here does not establish whether the 2026 alpha is available as of October 4, 2026.

SerenityOS’s developer build guide documents building and running Ladybird with the repository’s serenity.sh script, using AppKit on macOS and Qt on other platforms; it also gives a direct CMake/Ninja build route. This is developer-oriented documentation, not evidence of a straightforward packaged installation for general users.

How should you interpret the daily-driver verdict?

  • For historical context: List found SerenityOS workable in QEMU, but her test did not establish suitability on physical computers.
  • For Ladybird: Her 2023 report showed promising rendering alongside significant slowdowns and crashes. It is not a current performance review.
  • For a present-day decision: The roadmap alone cannot confirm release availability or everyday reliability. The sources cited here provide no current comparative performance benchmark.

SerenityOS also reported 959 contributors since the project began in a 2023 anniversary post, attributing that historical figure to GitHub; 194 people had made their first contribution during the preceding year. These figures indicate project participation at that time, not current contributor totals.
