Plex is a stronger fit if you value its account-based ecosystem and are willing to pay for remote personal-video streaming or Plex Pass features. Both organize and stream your personal media from a central server, but they differ in licensing, remote-access requirements, and which features require payment.
What are Jellyfin and Plex?
Both are media-server systems: you keep media on a server and use compatible apps to browse and play it on other devices. Jellyfin describes itself as free software with “no premium licenses or features.” Plex offers free local-network playback of personal media, with paid plans for remote video access and additional features.
The distinction is not simply “free versus paid.” With either system, you need somewhere to store and run the server, and self-hosting involves costs such as hardware, electricity, internet service, and your time. Jellyfin’s official documentation lists installation routes for Windows, macOS, several Linux distributions, containers, Synology, and TrueNAS SCALE; a NAS is one option, not a requirement. Jellyfin’s introduction and setup documentation links to installation, client, networking, plugin, and hardware-acceleration information.
Jellyfin vs Plex at a glance
| Decision | Jellyfin | Plex |
|---|---|---|
| Software and licensing | Free software; no premium licenses or gated features, according to Jellyfin’s official documentation. | Local-network playback of personal media is free; paid subscriptions cover remote streaming and additional features. |
| Remote personal-video streaming | Requires you to handle server and network configuration for external access. | Requires an eligible Remote Watch Pass or Plex Pass, plus Remote Access configured on the server. |
| Paid features | No premium tier is described in the cited official documentation. | Plex Pass includes remote streaming and listed benefits such as hardware transcoding, downloads, and skipping intros and credits. |
| Published price found | No premium software license price. | Standard Remote Watch Pass is $2.99/month or $29.99/year in USD after introductory pricing; Plex’s plans page did not expose a current Plex Pass price when checked on October 7, 2026. |
| Best suited to | People who want a no-premium-license system and are willing to administer a home server. | People who want Plex’s ecosystem and remote video access, or value Plex Pass features enough to subscribe. |
Is Jellyfin free?
Jellyfin’s official documentation calls it free software and states that there are “no premium licenses or features.” In practical terms, you do not need a Jellyfin subscription to unlock a premium feature tier. That does not make a self-hosted setup cost-free: storage, server hardware, power, internet service, and maintenance may all have costs.

Jellyfin’s official documentation points to installation options and guidance for networking and hardware acceleration. Your existing computer or supported storage device may be adequate; the cited material does not establish one required server model or minimum specification.
How do Plex remote streaming and passes work?
Plex distinguishes watching personal video on your local network from streaming it remotely. Local-network playback is free, but remote personal-video streaming requires a qualifying active subscription: the server administrator’s Plex Pass, the viewer’s Plex Pass, or the viewer’s Remote Watch Pass. Remote Access must also be configured on the server.

Remote Watch Pass
Remote Watch Pass covers remote personal-content streaming. Plex’s plans page stated a standard price of $2.99 per month or $29.99 per year in USD after introductory pricing when checked on October 7, 2026. Prices may differ by currency, and the introductory period is not the standard recurring price.
Plex Pass
Plex Pass includes remote streaming as well as other premium features, including hardware transcoding, downloads, and intro- and credit-skipping features listed by Plex. It is therefore broader than Remote Watch Pass. The current Plex Pass price was not exposed on the official plans page when checked, so no price is stated here.

Jellyfin vs Plex remote access: what should you expect?
With Plex, remote access has two parts: an eligible subscription for remote video streaming and server-side Remote Access configuration. A pass does not by itself configure the server or guarantee a particular connection will work.

- Storage Purpose-Built for Data Security – A NAS designed to keep your data safe, the LS200 features a closed system to reduce vulnerabilities from 3rd party apps and SSL encryption for secure file transfers.
- Back Up Multiple Computers & Devices – NAS Navigator management utility and PC backup software included. NAS Navigator 2 for macOS 15 and earlier. You can set up automated backups of data on your computers.
Jellyfin’s official documentation links to networking settings and external-access guidance, but the available material does not establish a single guaranteed setup path or specific network configuration that will work for every home. Expect to take responsibility for the server and network administration involved in making a self-hosted service reachable outside your home. Jellyfin’s networking documentation is the starting point.
Choose based on the trade-off: Jellyfin avoids a premium software license, while Plex offers a defined subscription route to remote video streaming. Neither comparison alone establishes that one setup will be easier or more reliable for every household.

Playback, clients, and transcoding
Whether a media server has to convert a file depends on the client and the media being played. Jellyfin’s client documentation notes that subtitles can affect whether playback is direct-streamed or requires video transcoding. Plex lists hardware transcoding as a Plex Pass benefit. That difference matters if you expect the server to convert video rather than simply deliver a file a client can play.
Before choosing a platform or upgrading a server, check the combination you actually plan to use:
- The Jellyfin or Plex client app available on each viewing device.
- The codecs and source quality of your media, and whether the client can play them directly.
- Subtitle formats and whether they trigger video transcoding for your setup.
- Your upload bandwidth for remote viewing and the number of simultaneous streams you expect.
- Whether hardware transcoding is important enough to justify Plex Pass, or whether your clients can usually play files directly.
The official pages cited here do not establish a universal CPU, GPU, or NAS requirement or a sizing formula. Server needs depend on the media, client compatibility, connection, and workload; do not assume a specific device will play every file or that either platform requires a particular processor.
Which should you choose?
Choose Jellyfin if
- You want free software without a premium license tier.
- You are comfortable setting up and administering a server and its network access.
- You want to evaluate clients, media compatibility, and hardware needs against your own devices before making changes.
Choose Plex if
- You want Plex’s account-based ecosystem and are comfortable paying for remote personal-video streaming.
- You want Plex Pass features such as hardware transcoding, downloads, or intro and credit skipping.
- You mainly watch on your local network and value Plex’s available apps and features enough to use it, even without remote access.
For current subscription terms, consult Plex’s plans page; for Jellyfin setup and supported installation routes, consult its official documentation.
