Direct Play sends a compatible media file to your device as-is; transcoding converts some or all of it to meet the client’s requirements. Jellyfin also uses two intermediate modes: Remux changes the container without changing audio or video, while Direct Stream converts audio but leaves the video untouched. These distinctions matter when diagnosing server load, playback quality, or buffering.

How Jellyfin’s playback modes differ

Jellyfin identifies four playback types, ordered from lowest to highest server load: Direct Play, Remux, Direct Stream, and Transcode. The labels describe what the server does to the media—not simply whether the session involves any conversion.

Playback type What Jellyfin changes What happens to video
Direct Play Nothing; Jellyfin delivers the file without modification. Original video is unchanged.
Remux The container is changed; audio and video streams are left untouched. Original video is unchanged.
Direct Stream Audio is transcoded. Original video is unchanged.
Transcode The video stream is transcoded; audio may also be converted as needed. Video is converted for the client.

Jellyfin describes Direct Play as delivery “without transcoding,” with “no modification to the file and almost no additional load on the server.” Its documentation defines Remux as changing the container while leaving both streams untouched, Direct Stream as transcoding audio while leaving the original video untouched, and Transcode as transcoding the video stream. See Jellyfin’s transcoding documentation.

So a session labeled Direct Stream does involve conversion, but it does not mean Jellyfin is re-encoding the video. Check the playback type before concluding that the video codec or server processor is the problem.

Why one file Direct Plays on one device but transcodes on another

Direct Play depends on the complete playback combination working on the client: container, video codec and profile, audio codec and channel configuration, subtitles, and the device’s bitrate and resolution limits. A device that supports a particular video codec may still require a different playback mode because its app cannot handle the container, audio track, or subtitle format in that file.

Jellyfin uses client capability profiles and constraints when deciding whether and how to transcode. Its codec support guide shows support varying across browsers, Android, TV, iOS, Roku, Kodi, and desktop clients. Check the entry for the actual app or browser in use rather than assuming every device from the same manufacturer behaves alike.

When video conversion is needed, Jellyfin’s output choice can depend on source resolution and frame rate, target bitrate, input and output codecs, and client constraints. The client’s playback or bitrate settings can therefore affect whether Jellyfin has to transcode and what it sends. Jellyfin explains these constraints in its client documentation.

How audio, containers, and subtitles affect playback

Audio incompatibility

If a client cannot play the audio track, Jellyfin may convert audio while preserving the original video. That is Direct Stream. Compatibility can depend on more than the audio codec name: for example, a multichannel track may not suit a stereo playback device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Container incompatibility

If the audio and video streams are supported but the container is not, Jellyfin may remux the file. This changes how the streams are packaged, not the streams themselves, so Remux is not video transcoding.

Subtitle handling

Subtitles can change the playback path even when the video appears compatible. Depending on the subtitle format, container, and client, Jellyfin may pass subtitles through, convert them, or burn them into the video. Burn-in applies the subtitle image to the video during transcoding and is the most demanding of these subtitle paths.

There is no universal subtitle-format rule that guarantees Direct Play on every device. Jellyfin’s compatibility tables distinguish subtitle support by format and container, including SRT, WebVTT, ASS/SSA, and image subtitles. Check the relevant client and container combination in the codec support guide.

How to diagnose buffering or unexpected server load

  1. Check the active playback type. While the affected media is playing, open the Jellyfin dashboard or activity view and note whether the session is Direct Play, Remux, Direct Stream, or Transcode. Jellyfin shows the active type in the dashboard; see its transcoding documentation.
  2. If it says Direct Stream, check audio and packaging first. Look at the audio codec and channel configuration, container compatibility, and whether subtitles are being converted. Direct Stream leaves the video untouched, so an unsupported video codec is not the first explanation to investigate.
  3. If it says Transcode, check the client’s limits and the source. Review playback or bitrate settings, source resolution and frame rate, and the codecs Jellyfin is selecting for output. Client capability profiles and constraints inform that choice.
  4. Test playback with subtitles disabled. If the session changes, the subtitle format or its handling may have required conversion or burn-in. Re-enable subtitles and check whether another format supported by that particular client and container is available.
  5. Consider hardware acceleration only after confirming the workload. If the server repeatedly needs video transcoding, check whether acceleration supports the exact codecs and processing stages required on your hardware, operating system, and driver.

This sequence helps separate a client compatibility issue from a server performance issue. Buffering by itself does not establish that the video is being transcoded; the dashboard playback type is the more useful starting point.

When hardware acceleration may help

Hardware acceleration can speed up supported parts of a video-transcoding pipeline, but availability depends on platform and configuration. Jellyfin lists Intel Quick Sync Video (QSV), NVIDIA NVDEC/NVENC, AMD AMF, Linux VA-API, macOS VideoToolbox, and Rockchip RKMPP among its validated methods. The hardware-acceleration guide describes platform-specific options.

A playback pipeline can involve decoding, deinterlacing, scaling, tone mapping, subtitle burn-in, and encoding. Not every stage is necessarily accelerated, so partial hardware acceleration can still leave substantial CPU work. Check the requirements for the specific pipeline in Jellyfin’s hardware-acceleration documentation and the relevant vendor page, such as its NVIDIA GPU guide or AMD GPU guide.

HDR-to-SDR tone mapping is one case where acceleration can be particularly important: Jellyfin warns that software HDR tone mapping can be very slow and recommends a GPU for this use. That does not make a GPU necessary for Direct Play, or guarantee that any GPU will accelerate every codec and stage. Before buying hardware for frequent transcoding, verify the codec, operating system, driver, and full pipeline support against Jellyfin’s hardware selection guide.

Which playback mode should you aim for?

If the client can play the original file reliably, Direct Play minimizes server work and avoids server-side media conversion. Remux and Direct Stream still preserve the original video, while video Transcode is the mode that converts it. The right practical choice is the mode that delivers reliable playback to the device; forcing a mode the client cannot handle can prevent playback or create other problems.

  • Want the least server work? Use a client that supports the file’s container, video, audio, and subtitle combination so Jellyfin can Direct Play.
  • Video is unchanged but the session is not Direct Play? Remux or Direct Stream may be addressing container or audio compatibility.
  • Video Transcode is active? Check client bitrate and resolution constraints, source properties, and whether the required hardware-acceleration path is supported.
  • Transcoding is frequent? Consider whether another client or compatible media version would avoid conversion before upgrading the server.
