Neither JBL nor Ultimate Ears is a clear winner across the board. Both sell portable Bluetooth speakers in several size tiers; the better fit depends on the model you choose, how long you need it to play, the protection it offers, and whether it can join speakers you already own. The comparisons below use manufacturers’ published specifications and features—not independent listening tests.

How the current lineups compare

JBL’s official comparison page lists the GO 4, CLIP 5, GRIP, FLIP 7, CHARGE 6, XTREME 4, and BOOMBOX 4, spanning small portable speakers to larger carry and party models. Ultimate Ears’ catalog lists the MINIROLL, WONDERBOOM 4, BOOM 4, MEGABOOM 4, EVERBOOM, EPICBOOM, and HYPERBOOM, with a similar range from ultra-portable to larger speakers. Listings and availability can vary by region.

That breadth makes brand-level shorthand less useful than comparing particular models. Start with the size you can carry, then check the battery claim, protection rating, and features you will actually use.

Which brand has the right size for you?

For a compact speaker, compare JBL’s FLIP 7 with Ultimate Ears’ WONDERBOOM 4; for smaller form factors, JBL also lists the GO 4 and CLIP 5, while UE lists the MINIROLL. The FLIP 7 is listed at 1.82 lb and 7.2 × 2.7 × 2.8 inches. Comparable dimensions were not stated in the inspected UE product-page text, so those figures alone do not establish which speaker is easier to carry.

Battery life: compare claims, not guarantees

JBL lists the FLIP 7 at up to 14 hours of playback, the CHARGE 6 at up to 28 hours, and the XTREME 4 at up to 24 hours, with up to six additional hours using Playtime Boost. Ultimate Ears lists up to 14 hours for the WONDERBOOM 4, up to 15 hours for the BOOM 4, and up to 20 hours for the MEGABOOM 4.

JBL FLIP 5, Waterproof Portable Bluetooth Speaker, Black, Small
  • Wireless Bluetooth streaming
  • 12 hours of playtime
  • IPX7 waterproof
  • Pair multiple speakers with party boost
  • Premium JBL sound quality

These are manufacturers’ maximum claims, not results from a shared test. Ultimate Ears says actual BOOM 4 battery life varies with use, settings, and environmental conditions; listening volume and other usage conditions can affect real-world playback. Treat the figures as a starting point, not a promise that one model will last longer in your circumstances.

  • JBL FLIP 7: listed as IP68.

  • JBL CHARGE 6: JBL describes it as waterproof, dustproof, and drop-proof; the cited material does not provide an IP rating here.

  • Ultimate Ears WONDERBOOM 4: described as IP67 and floatable; UE also gives five-foot (1.5-meter) drop-tested wording.

Choose based on the conditions you expect—such as dust, water, or accidental drops—and confirm the exact model’s current specifications. A feature or rating listed for one speaker should not be applied to the rest of its brand’s lineup.

Adding speakers: check ecosystem compatibility

Multi-speaker playback is a practical differentiator if you want to expand a set you already own. JBL promotes Auracast on the cited newer models. Ultimate Ears’ BOOM 4 and MEGABOOM 4 use PartyUp in the UE | BOOM app and list support for compatible UE speaker families.

Before choosing a speaker to add to an existing group, check compatibility for the exact models you own. A shared brand name—or the presence of a grouping feature—does not establish that two particular speakers can connect together.

Useful extras depend on the model

The JBL XTREME 4 lists a built-in powerbank, shoulder strap, and replaceable battery sold separately. The WONDERBOOM 4 lists Outdoor Boost and podcast mode, as well as stereo pairing with a compatibility limitation. These are individual model features, not standard equipment across either brand.

Give these extras weight only if they solve a real need—for example, charging another device or carrying a larger speaker by its strap. If they do not matter to you, prioritize the dimensions, battery claim, and protection of the models you are considering.

Why watts and brand descriptions do not settle sound quality

JBL cautions, “Always be careful comparing the wattage of speakers.” Watts alone do not establish perceived loudness or sound quality, and the official product pages use promotional descriptions rather than a controlled head-to-head listening comparison. The evidence here cannot support a claim that one brand sounds better overall.

If sound is your deciding factor, look for a comparison of the specific models under consistent conditions, or listen to them yourself where possible. Do not treat a brand’s marketing language or a wattage figure as a substitute for that comparison.

A practical way to choose

  1. Set the size limit. Compare the dimensions and weight of the specific models you would carry.
  2. Estimate the time between charges. Use the advertised maximums as rough reference points, allowing for differences in settings and use.
  3. Match protection to your use. Check the exact model’s rating and stated drop or float features rather than relying on the brand name.
  4. Check speaker-grouping compatibility. If you own JBL or UE speakers already, verify that the models you plan to combine are supported by the relevant system.
  5. Consider extras only when useful. A powerbank, strap, Outdoor Boost, or podcast mode may matter more than a small difference in a headline specification.
