Learn JavaScript first if your first goal is to make websites interactive or build browser-based applications. Neither is the right choice for everyone; start with the language that lets you build the project you care about.
If you are completely new to programming, note that Python’s official tutorial assumes you already know basic programming concepts. Python.org points new programmers to beginner-focused materials, while MDN offers JavaScript introductions for people new to web development.
Choose by the first thing you want to build
| Your priority | Best first fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Interactive browser pages or web applications | JavaScript | JavaScript works with HTML and CSS to add dynamic, interactive behavior to web pages. |
| General-purpose scripting or data-oriented tasks | Python | Python’s official tutorial describes the language as suited to scripting and rapid application development across many areas. |
| Use beyond the browser | Either | Python is general-purpose; JavaScript also runs outside browsers in environments such as Node.js. |
| A first language with an official resource for absolute beginners | Python, using beginner materials | Python.org directs people completely new to programming to beginner resources; the official Python tutorial itself expects basic programming knowledge. |
When JavaScript is the better first choice
Choose JavaScript if you want to see your code change what happens on a web page. MDN describes JavaScript as a language that lets developers implement complex features on web pages, including interactive behavior. It works alongside HTML, which structures a page, and CSS, which styles it.
A practical first project might be a button that reveals content, a small interactive form, or a page that updates when a user makes a selection. MDN has JavaScript fundamentals and tutorials for people new to web development.

#1 Best Overall
JavaScript is not limited to browser code. MDN also notes that it runs in environments such as Node.js, so learning it can lead to server-side and other non-browser uses as well.
When Python is the better first choice
Choose Python if your first project is a script, a small automation, or a program that processes data. Python’s official tutorial highlights scripting and rapid application development among its uses. A useful starter project could transform a simple data file or automate a repetitive task.
Rank #2
Python’s syntax is designed to be readable, but that does not prove it will be easier for every beginner. Your experience depends on the project, the learning materials, and the time you spend practicing.
What absolute beginners should know about learning resources
Python’s official tutorial has a prerequisite
The Python Software Foundation states: “This tutorial is designed for programmers that are new to the Python language, not beginners who are new to programming.” If you have never programmed before, start with Python.org’s beginner guide or another introductory resource, then use the official tutorial as a reference or follow-on.

MDN supports JavaScript learners new to web development
MDN provides introductory JavaScript material for people completely new to web development and links to fundamentals and tutorials. You will also need to learn enough HTML and CSS to create and style the pages your JavaScript will make interactive.
Both ecosystems have free official learning documentation. A book can offer another way to learn Python, but it is not required; Python.org and MDN provide free starting points.

Stack Overflow’s 2025 Developer Survey reported that Python adoption rose by 7 percentage points from 2024 to 2025, associating Python use with AI, data science, and back-end development. That is a change reported among survey respondents—not evidence that Python is easier to learn, that a beginner will succeed faster, or that it guarantees better job prospects.
The available comparison does not establish which language is objectively easiest, how quickly beginners become proficient, or which one produces better employment outcomes. For a first language, let your intended project—not a popularity figure—make the decision.
