Jagex removed a RuneScape trailer for the upcoming Dragon Slayer II quest after viewers pointed to details they believed indicated generative AI, including a character with six fingers. The studio apologized and said its trusted external partner had explicitly assured it that GenAI would not be used. Jagex did not name the partner or publish the outcome of its investigation.
Why did Jagex take down the Dragon Slayer II trailer?
The trailer was shown at RuneFest. Viewers quickly criticized imagery they considered signs of generative AI, including a six-fingered hand and oddly rendered footwear, according to PC Gamer’s October 5, 2026 report.
On October 4, Jagex moderator Alec “Mod Sween” Sween posted a statement in the Old School RuneScape community saying the company had taken the trailer down while it investigated urgently. He apologized for the six-finger detail: “there’s a sixth finger and, well, that’s pretty hard to explain away.” Jagex’s statement describes the concern and its response; it does not give a completed investigation finding that establishes how the imagery was made.
What did Jagex say about the external partner?
Jagex said a trusted external partner produced the trailer and had explicitly confirmed that GenAI would not be used. That is Jagex’s account of the assurance it received. The statement does not identify the partner or explain the production workflow, so it is not possible from the published account to say who made the disputed imagery or precisely how it entered the trailer.

Sween restated the studio’s policy: “We don’t use GenAI to create our games, artwork or creative assets, and will not knowingly allow it to be used on our behalf.” Jagex said this was the second recent time concerns about generative AI had surfaced through a partner it trusted, and that the pattern pointed to a problem with its own processes.
What changes did Jagex announce?
Jagex said it would overhaul its review processes and work with and commission community creators to tell the Dragon Slayer II story. The statement does not detail the new review controls or say that an overhaul is complete. It also does not establish when or whether a replacement trailer will be released.

How does this relate to the 100 Thieves controversy?
Jagex characterized the trailer issue as its second recent partner-related generative-AI concern. PC Gamer reported that the earlier controversy involved an AI-related dispute over Jagex’s clothing collaboration with 100 Thieves, days before the trailer criticism. These are separate projects; the available reporting does not say they used the same partner or production process.
| Episode | What was reported | What Jagex said or announced |
|---|---|---|
| Dragon Slayer II trailer, shown at RuneFest | Viewers flagged imagery including a six-fingered character and unusual footwear. | Jagex said its external partner had explicitly confirmed GenAI would not be used. It removed the trailer while investigating, apologized, and announced a review-process overhaul and work with community creators. |
| 100 Thieves clothing collaboration | PC Gamer described an earlier AI-related dispute involving the collaboration. | Jagex called the trailer concern its second recent partner-related incident. The cited reporting does not establish the collaboration’s production workflow or connect its partner to the trailer’s partner. |
What remains unknown?
- The identity of the external partner that produced the trailer.
- The production workflow and whether generative AI was used to create any of the disputed imagery.
- The findings of Jagex’s investigation and the specific review controls it will adopt.
- Whether a replacement trailer will be published.
The distinction matters: the visible details prompted accusations of AI use, while Jagex’s statement reports an investigation in progress and an assurance from its partner. The statement does not resolve those questions with a published finding.
