On August 21, 2023, Ivanti had issued urgent patches for CVE-2023-38035, an API authentication bypass in Ivanti Sentry, formerly MobileIron Sentry. The flaw affected the administrator-facing MobileIron Configuration Service (MICS), commonly available on port 8443. Administrators should check Ivanti’s current advisory for the affected and fixed versions, install the applicable update, and keep MICS off the public internet.
What CVE-2023-38035 allowed
The vulnerability affected APIs used to configure Sentry through its administrator portal. In Ivanti’s description, quoted by SecurityWeek on August 21, 2023, an unauthenticated actor could access some sensitive APIs. The reported potential consequences included changing configuration, running system commands, and writing files to the system.
SecurityWeek reported a CVSS severity score of 9.8 out of 10, attributed to Ivanti’s 2023 advisory. That score indicates the flaw’s assessed severity; it does not by itself establish whether a particular Sentry deployment was reachable or compromised. Ivanti said exploitation risk was lower when MICS port 8443 was not exposed to the internet, but network restriction does not replace installing the patch.
Which Sentry versions were reported as affected
The contemporaneous reports describe the scope somewhat differently. SecurityWeek reported versions 9.18 and earlier as affected. The SANS Internet Storm Center summary published August 22, 2023 named supported versions 9.16, 9.17, and 9.18, and cautioned that older versions might also be vulnerable.

These are historical reported ranges, not a substitute for checking your installed release against Ivanti’s current CVE-2023-38035 advisory. The available reporting does not establish the exact fixed build number or current support status. Confirm the applicable version and update instructions through Ivanti’s advisory and product support channel before scheduling an upgrade.
What Sentry administrators should do
- Identify the deployment. Confirm whether your organization runs Ivanti Sentry, including installations still referred to as MobileIron Sentry, and record the installed version.
- Check Ivanti’s current advisory. Use Ivanti’s CVE-2023-38035 product advisory or support channel to determine whether that specific release is affected and which update applies. Do not infer a fixed build from the historical version ranges above.
- Install the applicable update. Follow Ivanti’s current instructions for your deployment. The August 2023 reports confirm that urgent patches had been shipped, but do not provide a verified fixed build or upgrade sequence.
- Restrict MICS network access. Limit the administrator-facing MICS service, commonly on port 8443, to authorized internal management networks. Do not expose it directly to the internet. Ivanti’s recommendation, as quoted by SecurityWeek, was to restrict MICS access to internal management networks.
- Verify reachability. Check from outside the organization’s network that MICS is not publicly accessible, and confirm that the service remains reachable only from the intended management network.
What the August 2023 exploitation report does—and does not—say
SecurityWeek’s August 21, 2023 article said Ivanti knew of a limited number of impacted customers and that exploitation in the wild was then unclear. That is a statement about what was known at the time of publication, not a current assessment of threat activity. The historical reports here do not establish today’s exploitation status; consult current Ivanti security information and your organization’s incident-response process for present-day decisions.
