Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The zero-day behind the January 9, 2025 headline was CVE-2025-0282, a critical vulnerability in Ivanti Connect Secure (ICS), the VPN product formerly known as Pulse Connect Secure. It was an unauthenticated stack-based buffer overflow that could allow remote code execution on an affected appliance. The incident is from January 2025, not a newly reported 2026 attack; administrators should check Ivanti’s current advisory for product-specific fixed releases and assess potentially exposed systems for compromise.
What happened in the Ivanti VPN zero-day
CyberScoop published the headline on January 9, 2025. The next day, Singapore’s Cyber Security Agency (CSA) described CVE-2025-0282 as a critical zero-day and said it was reportedly being actively exploited. The activity identified in this January incident involved CVE-2025-0282 in Ivanti Connect Secure, not every Ivanti product or vulnerability. CyberScoop’s January 9 report and CSA’s January 10 alert provide the dated context.
What CVE-2025-0282 could let an attacker do
CVE-2025-0282 is an unauthenticated stack-based buffer overflow. An attacker did not need to authenticate to exploit it; successful exploitation could enable remote code execution on an affected appliance and potentially lead to compromise elsewhere in the victim’s network. NIST’s National Vulnerability Database assigned it a CVSS v3.1 score of 9.0 out of 10. The score reflects severity, but does not by itself establish that a particular organization was attacked or compromised. NVD’s CVE-2025-0282 record describes the vulnerability and affected product releases.
Which Ivanti releases were identified as affected
The NVD record lists releases before the following thresholds as affected:

| Product | Affected releases listed by NVD |
|---|---|
| Ivanti Connect Secure | Before 22.7R2.5 |
| Ivanti Policy Secure | Before 22.7R1.2 |
| Ivanti Neurons for ZTA gateways | Before 22.7R2.3 |
These are the thresholds recorded by NVD for CVE-2025-0282, not a substitute for Ivanti’s current product-specific instructions. Confirm the exact product and installed release, then use Ivanti’s CVE-2025-0282 advisory to determine applicable fixed releases and response steps. Vendor guidance and supported-version status can change.
What administrators should do
- Identify the appliance and release. Inventory each Ivanti Connect Secure, Policy Secure, or Neurons for ZTA gateway in scope and verify its exact installed version.
- Check Ivanti’s official advisory. Match the product and release to the current vendor guidance; do not assume that a fix or instruction for one product family applies to another.
- Apply the applicable vendor update or mitigation. Follow Ivanti’s instructions for the specific system. The available advisories do not support a single universal remediation matrix covering every product and release.
- Assess possible compromise. Because exploitation was reported, updating alone does not demonstrate that an appliance was never compromised or is now clean. Organizations should investigate exposure and follow their incident-response and recovery procedures where warranted.
A separate Ivanti vulnerability was reported later
In April 2025, CSA reported active exploitation of CVE-2025-22457, a different vulnerability affecting Ivanti Connect Secure and other products. CSA’s April 7 notice listed Connect Secure releases 22.7R2.5 and earlier as affected, and said Pulse Connect Secure 9.1x had reached end of support on December 31, 2024. This later issue is separate from the January CVE-2025-0282 zero-day; its release details should not be used as a substitute for checking the advisory for either vulnerability. CSA’s April 7, 2025 advisory covers CVE-2025-22457.
