Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf iTunes keeps opening itself, first note when it launches: connecting an iPhone or iPad points to automatic syncing; launching at sign-in points to startup settings; reopening after a restart may be macOS restoring your session. If none fits, test remotes, playback controls, and media or alarm apps one at a time.
First, check which app and operating system you have
iTunes is still used for syncing on Windows PCs and on Macs running macOS Mojave or earlier. Newer Mac versions use Music and other Apple services, while Windows users may manage devices through either iTunes or Apple Devices. Confirm the app name and OS before following a menu path. Apple explains the changes to iTunes.
If iTunes opens when you connect an iPhone, iPad, or iPod
Start with automatic syncing. On Windows, the steps depend on whether you manage the device in Apple Devices or iTunes.
Windows with Apple Devices
- Connect the device and open Apple Devices.
- Select the device, then open General.
- Clear Automatically sync when this [device] is connected, then apply the change.
Apple documents this control in its Windows device-syncing instructions.

Windows with iTunes
In iTunes, select the connected device and turn off its automatic-sync option. You can also use iTunes’ Devices preference to prevent connected iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically. Apple’s iTunes syncing guidance for PC covers these controls.
Mac using iTunes
On a Mac running iTunes, the original guidance uses a global setting to prevent automatic syncing. The exact interface can vary by macOS version, so use the device’s iTunes settings and check Apple’s instructions for your version rather than assuming an older menu path still applies. Apple identifies iTunes syncing as the workflow for Mojave or earlier in its iTunes overview.

If it opens when you sign in to your Mac
Check the apps configured to launch at login: open System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions and remove an unwanted item from Open at Login. Apple notes that software can also open an app through mechanisms not listed there, so an empty list does not rule out every startup trigger. See Apple’s Login Items instructions.
If it returns after a restart or app relaunch
macOS may be restoring the previous session rather than launching iTunes as a startup item. When you shut down or restart, clear Reopen windows when logging back in. On macOS Ventura or later, you can also open System Settings > Desktop & Dock and enable Close windows when quitting an application to prevent app windows from being restored when you reopen an app. Apple describes these options in its guidance on reopening windows.

If the launch seems unrelated to login or device connection
Treat hardware and third-party software as possibilities to test, not established causes. Write down what happened just before iTunes appeared, then change or disconnect one suspected trigger at a time and see whether the launch recurs.
- Test an Apple infrared remote or other remote control. If an infrared remote is suspected, the Mac’s infrared-receiver setting may be relevant, but its availability and location vary by macOS release.
- Disconnect headphones or speakers with next-track controls and check whether playback buttons are triggering the app.
- Quit or temporarily disable alarm-clock apps or widgets, screen savers that play music, and media-server software such as Logitech Media Server, testing each separately.
If changing one item stops the launches and restoring it brings them back, that helps identify a likely trigger. Avoid changing several things at once, which makes the result harder to interpret.

Do not disable Windows background components just because iTunes is closed
Some Apple background processes support device recognition and syncing even when iTunes itself is not open. Apple’s Windows guidance on Apple software processes includes iTunesHelper and advises against disabling these components solely because iTunes is closed. If Windows does not recognize a connected device, disabling them can interfere with the function you need.
