A cold, rainy day can be a good time to research and prepare for the next hot spell—not because the weather guarantees a discount, but because you can compare models without the pressure of an overheated room. The key is to choose by current portable-AC ratings, room fit, and installation needs rather than by a headline BTU number alone.
Why buy before you need the cooling?
When temperatures rise, discomfort can make it tempting to buy the first unit that appears powerful enough and is available. Shopping ahead gives you time to measure the room, check how a model exhausts hot air, and compare delivery prices, return terms, and installation requirements. A rainy day is a convenient prompt to do that planning; it is not evidence that portable ACs cost less today.
No current offer or seasonal price pattern is established here. Check a retailer’s dated listing for the model you are considering, including shipping and return conditions, before treating it as a deal.
What do portable AC ratings actually tell you?
Compare current DOE cooling-capacity figures
Portable ACs have a specific regulatory meaning: DOE defines a “portable air conditioner” as a portable encased assembly that delivers cooled, conditioned air to an enclosed space, with certain other appliance categories excluded. See DOE’s portable air conditioner page.

For capacity, look for the current DOE-reported seasonally adjusted cooling capacity (SACC), not just a prominent BTU figure. DOE’s test procedure accounts for factors including heat transfer through the exhaust duct and air infiltration, which can affect a portable unit’s delivered cooling. The procedure and metrics are described in the Federal Register rulemaking on portable-AC testing.
AHAM explains that newer capacity numbers can look lower because DOE changed the test procedure; that does not by itself mean a model’s cooling ability changed. Check whether two advertised figures use the same test basis before comparing them. See AHAM’s portable air conditioner guidance.

Use efficiency figures alongside capacity
DOE’s portable-AC procedure includes combined energy efficiency ratio (CEER) and estimated annual operating cost as well as SACC. Compare those figures on a consistent basis when available. A higher capacity number alone does not show how efficiently a unit operates or what it may cost to run.
How to choose a unit that fits your room
Start with the room and the actual installation, then compare models that can work in those conditions. AHAM cautions that an undersized unit may leave a room inadequately cooled, while an oversized one can remove less humidity effectively.

- Room size and conditions: Measure the space and check the model’s stated coverage and instructions. Room layout and conditions matter, so treat a coverage figure as guidance rather than a guarantee.
- Duct configuration: Compare single-duct and dual-duct designs, and confirm the exhaust hose can be routed as the manufacturer specifies.
- Window fit: Check that the included or compatible window kit suits your window type and opening. A unit that cannot be vented correctly is not a practical fit.
- Condensate handling: Read how the model handles collected moisture, including whether it needs manual emptying or a drain connection.
- Noise and electrical needs: Review the manufacturer’s noise information and power requirements, especially if the unit will run in a bedroom or on a circuit shared with other appliances.
- Ownership terms: Compare warranty coverage, return rules, and delivered price for the exact model and seller.
Which buying advice does not apply to portable ACs?
Do not use room-air-conditioner sizing charts or certification claims as though they automatically describe portable units. DOE’s cited Federal acquisition guidance for room air conditioners covers window and through-wall units and expressly excludes portable ACs. Likewise, ENERGY STAR’s room-air-conditioner guidance addresses room units, not whether a particular portable model qualifies for that certification.

A practical pre-season comparison
- Measure the room and note the window or other manufacturer-approved exhaust route.
- Shortlist models by current DOE/SACC capacity and stated room coverage; do not rank them using mismatched BTU test figures.
- Compare CEER and operating-cost information where it is published, along with noise, condensate handling, duct setup, and electrical requirements.
- Confirm the installation details in each model’s manual, particularly hose routing and window-kit compatibility.
- Check the exact seller’s current listing for stock, delivered price, warranty, and return terms. A cold or rainy forecast does not establish a lower price.
