IT Specification Basics for New Developers (LFD141) is a beginner-friendly, online course from Linux Foundation Education about planning, writing, checking and maintaining IT specifications. The current course page lists it at $0, self-paced, with 14–16 hours of material, 90 days of online access and a digital badge. No prerequisites are listed. The badge’s Credly page says a passing grade of 70% on the final exam is required.

What does LFD141 cover?

The course follows the work involved in creating and maintaining an IT specification, from early planning to practical application. Linux Foundation Education’s published outline lists these chapters:

  1. Course introduction
  2. Introduction to IT specification
  3. Planning and research
  4. Writing the specification
  5. Detailing nonfunctional requirements
  6. Verification and validation
  7. Documentation and maintenance
  8. Case studies and practical applications
  9. Bringing it all together

The stated focus is on precise requirements, including nonfunctional requirements, and on verifying and maintaining documentation. The aim is to support clearer communication and collaboration in IT development work. The public course outline does not identify a specific specification standard, required template or named requirements method, so learners should not assume the course teaches one particular framework.

Who is the course for?

Linux Foundation Education describes LFD141 as introductory training for new developers, project managers and technical professionals. The course page lists no prerequisites, making it a plausible starting point for someone who wants to learn how specifications are planned and documented without first completing an advanced requirements course.

How long does it take, and is it free?

The current official LFD141 course page lists the price as $0, the format as online and self-paced, the course material as 14–16 hours, and online access as 90 days. Those are the current listed terms; check the page before enrolling because price and access conditions can change.

Linux Foundation Education’s March 20, 2025 launch announcement called LFD141 “a free, 16-hour, self-paced, e-Learning course featuring hands-on labs to practice your new skills.” The announcement also mentioned assignments, a discussion forum, a badge and a completion certificate. Its 16-hour estimate differs slightly from the current course page’s 14–16-hour range; use the current course page for present enrollment details.

What credential does LFD141 offer?

The current course page lists a digital badge. Credly’s LFD141 badge description characterizes it as foundational and says earners have demonstrated the ability to gather and document requirements, write clear and precise specifications, validate accuracy, and align with industry standards to support IT development and collaboration.

Credly lists a passing grade of 70% on the final exam as the earning criterion. That threshold is specific to this badge; it should not be assumed to apply to other Linux Foundation courses. The badge is evidence of completing the stated assessment, not an independent measure of job readiness or a guarantee of project or career outcomes.

What to expect—and what the public outline does not establish

The course materials are described as self-paced online learning with hands-on labs and assignments. The outline indicates a practical sequence covering planning, drafting, nonfunctional requirements, verification and validation, and documentation maintenance. However, the public description does not provide lesson-level examples or specify which formal standards or requirements techniques are taught. If you need training in a particular standard or an organization-specific template, confirm the course content meets that need before enrolling.

Linux Foundation Education’s course page says the training can improve project success, collaboration and career opportunities. Those are promotional aims, not published measured outcomes: the available course and badge pages do not report an outcome study establishing an effect on employment or project success.

  • Experience level: It is presented as a beginner course, with no prerequisites listed.
  • Coverage: Its outline spans planning and research, specification writing, nonfunctional requirements, validation and documentation upkeep.
  • Format and time: It is online and self-paced; the current page estimates 14–16 hours of material.
  • Assessment and credential: The badge criteria specify a 70% passing grade on the final exam.
  • Access and price: The current page lists 90 days of online access and a $0 price; verify current terms before enrollment.

If your next step is learning about open standards development on GitHub, Linux Foundation Education also lists LFD140: GitHub for Open Standards Development as a separate course. Check its current details independently; it is not a substitute for confirming whether LFD141 covers a specific specification standard you need.
