Neither iSCSI nor NFS is inherently faster or more resilient for virtual machine storage. iSCSI presents block storage to hosts as logical units (LUNs); NFS presents a shared filesystem that hosts mount. Either can support shared VM storage when the hypervisor and storage platform support the required operations. Choose based on workload, topology, failover design, and the tools your team can operate—and benchmark the intended configuration.

How iSCSI and NFS present storage to virtualization hosts

Area iSCSI NFS
Storage interface Block devices or LUNs presented to an initiator over IP A filesystem export mounted by hosts over the network
Typical setup work Configure targets, initiators, LUN access, paths, and multipathing Configure exports, mounts, host permissions, and filesystem behavior
Performance factors Target capability, block I/O path, session and path configuration, network capacity, and workload Storage server and filesystem, client and mount behavior, network flows, and workload
Resilience checks Supported multipath I/O (MPIO), redundant target paths, and failover behavior Storage-service redundancy, client behavior, mount recovery, and failover behavior
VM operations Shared block storage can serve platform-specific datastore or shared-disk uses Shared file storage can provide file-based datastore access

Both are networked shared-storage options in Red Hat virtualization documentation, and shared network storage can support guest migration in the documented environment. That does not mean every hypervisor, version, or storage product supports every migration, snapshot, backup, locking, or shared-disk workflow. Confirm the support matrix for the exact combination you plan to run.

Which protocol performs better for VM workloads?

There is no protocol-wide performance winner established by the cited evidence. Results depend on I/O size, read/write mix, workload concurrency, storage-service limits, network paths and competing traffic, and host configuration. A high throughput result alone is not enough: small random I/O can still have unacceptable latency.

What the available benchmarks do—and do not—show

Microsoft’s Azure VMware Solution documentation describes Azure NetApp Files NFS datastore tests across read/write mixes of 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, and 0:100. In that specific service and test environment, it reports submillisecond traffic latency under minimal load and 2–3 ms under medium-to-heavy load. These figures describe those Azure VMware Solution test configurations, not NFS generally, and they are not a comparison with iSCSI.

The same documentation, last updated June 18, 2026, says Azure VMware Solution supports nconnect=4 for Azure NetApp Files datastores. In that setup, it creates four parallel TCP connections per datastore per host. This is a service-specific configuration detail, not a general NFS tuning prescription.

Microsoft’s Azure Elastic SAN guidance says VM I/O to that service consumes VM network bandwidth. It recommends providing enough bandwidth for both production or VM-to-VM traffic and iSCSI traffic. For reaching that service’s maximum IOPS and throughput, its guidance specifies 32 sessions per target volume, managed with MPIO. Do not transfer that session count to other iSCSI targets.

Benchmark the whole VM I/O path

Microsoft’s Hyper-V storage guidance describes performance as an end-to-end path: guest storage stack, host virtualization layer, host storage stack, and physical disk. A bottleneck or configuration mismatch at any layer can dominate the result, so comparing protocol names without controlling the rest of the path can be misleading.

  • Use representative VM workloads and the same dataset, hardware, queue depth, block sizes, and read/write mix for both candidates.
  • Measure latency, IOPS, throughput, and queueing; include the expected competing network traffic.
  • Test the intended production path and failure configuration rather than measuring only an ideal single path.
  • Check that virtual disk block sizes fit the workload’s allocation patterns.

Virtual disk format also affects the path. Microsoft’s Hyper-V guidance notes that fixed virtual disks can reduce fragmentation and mapping overhead, while dynamic and differencing disks have trade-offs. Long differencing-disk or snapshot chains can impair performance. These observations are Hyper-V guidance, not a universal ranking of virtual disk formats across hypervisors.

How to compare resilience and failover

Resilience depends on the storage service, host support, network topology, and tested recovery behavior—not on choosing iSCSI or NFS by name. A design that performs well while every component is healthy may still fail operationally if a path interruption or service failover leaves hosts unable to access their datastores.

  • For iSCSI: verify redundant target paths, supported MPIO behavior and policy, and initiator recovery after path loss.
  • For NFS: verify storage-service redundancy, client behavior during an interruption, mount recovery, and supported filesystem semantics.
  • For either protocol: check host and storage-controller availability, network redundancy, and whether the hypervisor supports the failover mode you intend to use.
  • For VM data protection: confirm snapshot and backup consistency with both the virtualization layer and the applications running inside guests.

Test path interruption, host restart, storage-service failover, and recovery. Confirm that the host regains access as expected and that VM operations behave correctly; normal-operation throughput does not prove failover works.

What to check before setting up shared VM storage

  1. Confirm support: Check the hypervisor and storage vendor documentation for the exact versions, protocol, datastore or storage-pool type, and required shared operations.
  2. Plan the storage configuration: For iSCSI, define target discovery, initiator configuration, LUN access, redundant paths, and the supported MPIO policy. For NFS, define exports, mounts, host permissions, and supported filesystem and locking behavior.
  3. Design the network: Validate capacity, routing, MTU consistency, network placement, and competing traffic across the host-to-storage path. Size capacity for storage I/O as well as VM and production traffic.
  4. Benchmark the intended workload: Compare both options using equivalent hardware and test conditions, including latency and the read/write patterns your VMs actually generate.
  5. Exercise failure and recovery: Test path loss, host restart, service failover, and restoration before relying on the datastore for production VMs.
  6. Validate VM operations: Test migration, snapshots, backup, locking, and application consistency as applicable to your platform and workload.

Keep legacy NFS guidance in context

The Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 Virtualization Administration Guide’s “Shared Storage Example: NFS for a Simple Migration” describes a narrow legacy scenario: it calls for synchronous export behavior, says NFS file locking is unsupported in that example, and limits the example to a few VMs. In that context, it says, “iSCSI storage is a better choice for large deployments.” This is version- and scenario-specific advice, not a current universal rule for choosing between protocols. Check current documentation for your platform rather than applying those RHEL 6 details to a different release.

Which option should you choose?

  • Choose NFS when your hypervisor and storage platform support the needed NFS datastore operations and your team prefers administering shared exports and mounts.
  • Choose iSCSI when your platform and storage design call for block LUNs and you can configure and operate the required initiators, paths, and MPIO behavior.
  • Choose neither by assumption: if performance, scale, or failover requirements are demanding, validate platform limits and benchmark both candidates under the workload and topology you will deploy.

The available Microsoft benchmark evidence is service-specific, and it does not provide an apples-to-apples NFS-versus-iSCSI comparison. Base the decision on supported features and measured behavior in your own intended configuration, not a blanket claim that one protocol is faster or easier.
