For shared hypervisor storage over iSCSI, choose and configure three separate layers: a target that exports block storage, network paths between storage and hosts, and each hypervisor’s initiator and multipath setup. TrueNAS provides a managed iSCSI target; Linux LIO/TCM is a kernel target framework. Neither replaces host-side configuration, and there is no evidence-based universal winner for speed, reliability, or ease of use.

How iSCSI storage works for a hypervisor

iSCSI carries SCSI block-storage commands over an IP network. The target exports a logical unit number (LUN); the hypervisor’s initiator discovers the target and logs in to use that storage. In the TrueNAS VMware example, ESXi hosts are initiators and the TrueNAS system is the target. See the TrueNAS VMware integration guide for that product’s documented setup context.

An iSCSI target IQN is its iSCSI Qualified Name: the identifier used to identify a target or initiator in iSCSI configuration and access rules. Treat it as an identity, not an IP address. The IP address locates a portal on the network; the IQN identifies the iSCSI endpoint or host.

Before implementation, verify that the target platform, hypervisor release, and any integration plugin you plan to use are supported together. Initiator behavior and configuration vary by platform and version; there is no single UI sequence that applies to all VMware and Proxmox installations.

TrueNAS and Linux LIO are different kinds of choices

TrueNAS is a storage platform with a managed iSCSI interface. LIO, also called TCM in the Linux kernel documentation, is a framework for building a Linux iSCSI target. It separates transport fabrics from storage backstores. Its documented backstores include files, block devices, RAM, and other SCSI devices; TCMU offers a userspace route for backends that are awkward to implement in kernel code. These options do not imply equivalent durability, data services, performance, or operational support. Those depend on the particular backend and implementation.

Decision point TrueNAS Linux LIO/TCM
What it is Storage platform with a managed iSCSI interface, as described in the TrueNAS iSCSI documentation. Linux kernel target framework with fabric and backstore components, as described in the Linux kernel TCMU documentation.
Storage backing Managed through TrueNAS storage objects; the cited pages do not establish a like-for-like backend comparison with LIO. Documented backstore types include files, block devices, RAM, and SCSI devices; TCMU can connect userspace backends. Their production suitability depends on the implementation.
Availability and multipath TrueNAS documents dual-controller active/standby HA and iSCSI ALUA support for its VMware context. Independent host and network path configuration is still needed. The cited kernel documentation describes target architecture, not a turnkey hypervisor HA or multipath design. Configure and validate target, network, and host behavior for the chosen Linux distribution and deployment.
Configuration ownership TrueNAS target settings are managed through its platform; hypervisor initiator and path settings remain host-side tasks. Target setup is Linux distribution and implementation dependent; the hypervisor initiator remains a separate host-side task.
Performance, cost, or ease-of-use winner Not established by the cited documentation. Not established by the cited documentation.

Choose based on who will own target configuration, backend operations, support, upgrades, and failure recovery—not on an assumed performance ranking. Confirm compatibility against current platform and hypervisor support documentation before committing to a design.

Plan multipath as an end-to-end network and host design

Multipath I/O (MPIO) means multiple physical paths between an initiator and a target. TrueNAS says both ends must be configured, with additional iSCSI portal IP addresses on the target side. It recommends MPIO rather than link aggregation (LAGG) for iSCSI. Its networking recommendations describe the target-side guidance.

A second portal address by itself does not establish a redundant path. For the paths to tolerate a failure, they must be independent through the parts of the network the design is meant to protect. Trace each route from the host interface to the target interface and identify shared switches, links, and other failure points. This is a topology-design implication of requiring multiple physical paths, not a guarantee that any particular arrangement survives a given failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Define the failure you want to tolerate. Decide whether the design must withstand a single host NIC, cable, switch port, switch, or other component failure. A path is only independent with respect to the components it does not share.
  2. Provide distinct network paths. Use separate host and target connectivity appropriate to that failure model. An additional Ethernet adapter is optional if the host needs interfaces for physically distinct paths; the cited guidance specifies no required adapter speed or model.
  3. Configure target portals. On TrueNAS, configure the additional iSCSI portal IP addresses required for the paths. Do not substitute LAGG for iSCSI MPIO.
  4. Configure the initiator and multipath on every host. Use the applicable host-vendor procedure for its release to discover the target through the intended portals and manage multiple paths. The TrueNAS target configuration alone does not configure ESXi or a Linux/Proxmox initiator.
  5. Validate the intended failure behavior. Confirm that the host sees and manages the expected paths, then test path loss and recovery in a controlled maintenance window. The cited documentation does not specify a universal failover time or test procedure.

Keep target HA, ALUA, and MPIO separate

These mechanisms address different parts of the system. TrueNAS describes its dual-controller HA design as active/standby and says it supports ALUA on iSCSI to reduce failover time. Those are TrueNAS product capability statements, not a promised recovery-time figure.

  • Target HA concerns storage-controller availability. It does not create independent host-to-target network paths.
  • ALUA communicates asymmetric access characteristics for storage paths. It is not a substitute for configuring paths on the host.
  • MPIO manages multiple host-visible I/O paths. It does not, by itself, make the target controllers or network switches redundant.

For a resilient design, decide which failure domains each layer covers and verify the combined behavior. TrueNAS states that a properly configured HA system can offer “up to 5x 9’s” availability; this is a vendor claim, and the cited page does not provide an independent measurement method for it.

Configure discovery, authentication, and access control

Connecting a host involves more than entering a portal address. TrueNAS describes dynamic SendTargets discovery and manually configured static discovery as valid options. Authentication and access rules then determine which initiator can log in and use the exported storage.

Discovery

Choose dynamic or static discovery according to the host and target configuration you support. Use the target portal address or addresses for discovery, and identify the target by its IQN. Do not assume discovery alone grants access to a LUN.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CHAP authentication

TrueNAS documents unidirectional CHAP, in which the target authenticates to the initiator, and bidirectional CHAP, in which both sides authenticate. The TrueNAS Documentation Hub says bidirectional CHAP is usually recommended, while noting that it requires additional configuration and adds troubleshooting overhead. Keep CHAP secrets out of shared configuration examples and operational tickets.

Access rules

TrueNAS documents access restrictions based on initiator IQN, IP address, or CHAP username. Apply the narrowest rules appropriate to the deployment, rather than granting access broadly to every host on a storage network. The exact configuration fields and host-side steps can vary with platform release.

What changes for VMware and Proxmox/Linux hosts

VMware ESXi

In the TrueNAS VMware example, ESXi is the initiator and TrueNAS is the target. Configure target discovery, authentication, and access rules, then configure the ESXi initiator and its paths using instructions for the ESXi release in use. TrueNAS advises setting VMware guest disk timeouts to a minimum of 300 seconds in this datastore context to better tolerate long restarts or delayed disk operations. This is a TrueNAS recommendation, not a setting established here for other hypervisors or guest operating systems.

Proxmox and Linux

A Linux host’s iSCSI initiator and multipath setup are host-side matters; they are not the same as running LIO as a target. The TrueNAS Proxmox plugin’s configuration reference includes a target IQN and discovery portal, with optional additional portals and a multipath flag. Its example configuration uses tn_use_multipath 1. This is guidance for that plugin, not a universal requirement or a substitute for Proxmox’s native storage configuration. Check the installed plugin version and its current compatibility before applying its settings.

Choose MTU and network hardware for the workload

TrueNAS cautions that jumbo frames may increase throughput but can measurably increase latency on some unoptimized switch ASICs. Its VMware guidance notes that latency is often more important than throughput. These are vendor cautions, not universal benchmark results. Do not enable jumbo frames as a default performance fix: validate the MTU end to end across hosts, switches, and storage interfaces, then test with the actual workload.

The available documentation does not establish a universal Ethernet speed, NIC model, queue setting, block size, or performance winner for TrueNAS versus LIO. Select hardware and tune settings against the workload, host, NICs, switches, storage media, target backend, and software releases. If additional physical paths are part of the design, check that the host has suitable interfaces and that their compatibility is documented.

Pre-deployment checks

  • Record each host’s initiator IQN, target IQN, portal addresses, and access restrictions.
  • Confirm target, hypervisor, and plugin compatibility for the exact releases in use.
  • Map each intended path and its shared network components so the design’s failure coverage is clear.
  • Configure discovery, CHAP if used, and least-privilege access rules on the target and host.
  • Configure and verify multipath on both sides; do not treat target-side portal setup as complete host configuration.
  • Test path interruption and recovery under controlled conditions before relying on the design for production workloads.
  • For jumbo frames, validate the complete path MTU and measure behavior with the workload rather than assuming higher throughput means better storage performance.
