Unreliable Wi-Fi does not, by itself, prove your adapter is faulty. A missing Wi-Fi control, no networks appearing, failed sign-ins, or repeated dropouts can also result from a disabled radio, a driver or power setting, the router, or an app or firewall. Compare the PC with other devices and networks, then check the adapter and its software before deciding whether to contact the manufacturer or try a USB Wi-Fi adapter.

Identify what is actually failing

Start by describing the symptom rather than diagnosing the cause. These problems point to different parts of the connection:

  • Wi-Fi controls or the adapter are missing: Windows may not be detecting the adapter, but a disabled radio, driver issue, or other system problem can also make Wi-Fi unavailable.
  • No wireless networks appear: Check whether the PC can see networks elsewhere and whether other devices can see the same network.
  • Networks appear, but connection or sign-in fails: The cause may involve the network, its settings, or the adapter; this symptom alone does not establish hardware failure.
  • The PC connects and then disconnects: Test another network before assuming the adapter is at fault.

Note when the issue began and what preceded it: an operating-system or driver update, a firmware or policy change, or sleep and resume. Microsoft advises recording the baseline state and reproduction time before resets or driver removal. Its Windows client guidance says: “Before you reset the network stack, delete wireless profiles, remove the adapter or driver, or restart the device, collect the baseline state and record the reproduction time.” Microsoft’s wireless connectivity troubleshooting guide explains why that information can matter.

Rule out the radio, router, and other common causes

Make sure Wi-Fi is enabled

Check Windows’ Wi-Fi setting as well as any physical wireless switch or keyboard shortcut on the computer. Some PCs can disable wireless hardware independently of the Windows control. Intel’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking these hardware controls when an adapter appears disabled or is not working: Wi-Fi adapter is disabled or is not working.

Compare devices and networks

Check whether another device can connect to the same Wi-Fi network. Then, if possible, connect the affected PC to a different network. If the PC works elsewhere but fails on one network, the router or access point becomes a more plausible cause. If other devices also fail on the same network, investigate that network before focusing on the PC’s adapter. Intel recommends trying another network when diagnosing repeated disconnects: Intel’s guide to wireless adapters that keep disconnecting.

Check whether the problem is limited to one app or site

If Windows reports that the PC is connected but one app or website does not work, the wireless adapter may not be responsible. Microsoft notes that the issue can instead be with the app, website, or firewall. Test another site or app before changing the adapter’s driver or settings. See Microsoft’s Wi-Fi connection troubleshooting steps.

Check the driver and power settings

A driver problem can make an adapter disappear, fail to connect, or disconnect intermittently. If the computer maker provides a driver for your exact model, use that system-specific version. Intel’s guidance also recommends checking adapter power settings; its troubleshooting page covers driver, power, and related checks: Intel Wi-Fi adapter troubleshooting.

Before uninstalling a driver, download and save the appropriate replacement for your computer or adapter. Microsoft recommends having a backup driver in case Windows does not reinstall the adapter correctly. Intel also explains that some Windows inbox drivers may reinstall automatically, but that is not a reason to remove a driver without first securing the correct one: Intel’s clean wireless driver installation instructions.

Use Windows repair tools carefully

Windows includes a network troubleshooter. If simpler checks do not resolve the issue, Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide also describes uninstalling and reinstalling a network adapter driver and using Network reset.

These steps can change the evidence you need to diagnose the problem, so record the current state and when the failure occurs first. Network reset can also mean setting up VPN software or virtual switches again. Intel notes that it may require reinstalling VPN adapters and entering Wi-Fi or VPN passwords again. Treat a reset or driver removal as a later troubleshooting step, not proof that the adapter is physically defective.

When does an adapter look faulty?

Concern about the adapter is more reasonable when Wi-Fi remains missing or unusable after checking the radio controls, testing other networks, and addressing relevant driver and power settings. Persistent trouble is a reason to contact the PC manufacturer or adapter vendor, but these symptoms do not conclusively prove physical failure. The appropriate troubleshooting and escalation paths vary by adapter and computer; Intel’s wireless connectivity troubleshooting guide points users with unresolved issues toward OEM or Intel support.

A USB Wi-Fi adapter can be a temporary way to get online or a comparison device. If Wi-Fi works through it, that shows another adapter can connect, but it does not isolate every possible driver, antenna, or motherboard cause. Before buying one, confirm compatibility with your Windows version and computer, and with your router’s Wi-Fi capabilities. There is no universally suitable model established by the troubleshooting guidance.
