If it says FAT32, that volume is FAT32. This check reads the drive’s current format without changing it.
Check whether a USB drive is FAT32 in Windows
- Connect the USB drive and open File Explorer.
- Find the USB drive, right-click it, and select Properties.
- On the General tab, read the File system entry. FAT32 means the volume is FAT32; another file-system name means it is not.
- Close the Properties window. You do not need to format or erase the drive to check it.
Microsoft gives this Properties check as its method for seeing which file system a drive uses: Windows File Recovery: About modes and file systems.
Use DiskPart to inspect the selected volume
Windows also provides a command-line check. DiskPart’s filesystems command displays file-system information for the volume currently in focus. Because DiskPart commands apply to the selected object, make sure you have identified the USB volume before checking it.
- Open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal with administrator privileges, then enter
diskpart. - At the DiskPart prompt, enter
list volumeto identify the USB volume by its details, such as its drive letter and size. - Enter
select volume N, replacingNwith the USB volume’s number from the list. - Enter
filesystemsand review the information shown for the volume in focus. - Enter
exitto leave DiskPart when finished.
Microsoft documents the command and DiskPart’s focus behavior in its DiskPart reference. Do not substitute a format command for this inspection.

What the FAT label means on a Mac
Apple’s Disk Utility format guide calls its FAT format option MS-DOS (FAT) and recommends it for disks of 32 GB or smaller. That wording describes a format choice; the guide does not give a complete procedure for checking the current format of an already-formatted USB drive or establish how every macOS version labels one. See Apple’s Disk Utility guide for the documented terminology.
Why you should not format the drive to check it
Formatting creates a file system on a volume, changing the drive rather than simply reporting what is already there. Use the Properties check or DiskPart inspection instead. Microsoft describes the format operation in its format command reference.

Do not guess from the USB stick’s appearance, brand, capacity, or the device you plan to use it with. Supported file systems vary by storage device and operating system, so inspect the actual volume.
