Apple’s published privacy documentation does not say an iPhone never picks up sound. What it does say is that no app can use the microphone without your permission, that a visible indicator appears when the microphone is in use, and that Siri and Dictation audio is not kept by default. Those statements matter for the “is my phone listening?” question. They also point to a less dramatic explanation for ads that seem to echo a conversation: behavioral targeting built from your browsing, app, location, and Apple-service activity. That explanation is documented, and it can account for ads like these without any microphone involved, though no public source can prove the cause of one particular ad.

What Apple documents about the microphone

App permission and the microphone indicator

Apple’s privacy control page states: “No app can access the microphone or camera without your permission.” On iOS 14 and later, Apple says the device shows an indicator when an app uses the microphone or camera, and Control Center shows recent use. That is Apple’s stated platform policy. It is not an independent audit of every app, every iOS version, or every recording situation, so treat it as a description of how the system is designed to behave. Apple’s privacy control page sets out the details.

Siri and Dictation audio

Apple’s privacy features page says: “By default, Apple does not retain audio recordings of Siri and Dictation interactions.” According to the same passage, computer-generated transcripts are used to improve Siri and Dictation. Users can opt in to let Apple store and review audio and Siri interaction history, and they can opt out later.

“Not retained by default” is a narrower claim than “the microphone is never active” or “no audio is ever processed.” Processing a request to answer it is not the same as keeping a recording, and an opt-in setting changes what is kept. Read the claim as a statement about stored recordings under default settings.

How an ad can seem to know what you just said

Most of the documented ways an ad can be relevant do not involve audio at all. The table below sets out the inputs that Apple and the Federal Trade Commission describe, and the limit each source places on them.

Input Who describes it What the source actually says
App Store search and download history Apple, privacy control page May be used for relevant ads. Apple says this activity does not serve targeted ads outside Apple’s own apps.
Reading or followed topics in Apple News and Stocks Apple, privacy control page Ads in these apps can be based partly on what a person reads or follows. Same limit: not used for targeted ads outside those apps.
Browsing history and location FTC, consumer advice on how websites and apps collect and use information Described as possible inputs to personalized ads. The FTC notes that social media and other apps may track online activity.
Siri and Dictation audio Apple, privacy features page Not retained by default. Transcripts are used to improve Siri and Dictation. Apple’s description does not present audio as an advertising input.

Why a single ad cannot settle the question

These sources explain how ad systems can infer interests from digital behavior. They do not reveal which signal produced a given ad. A recent search, an article you opened, a location pattern, and a conversation about the same product can all point to the same category, and the ad system does not need to hear the conversation to reach it. An ad that feels uncannily specific is a reasonable prompt to check settings, but it is not evidence on its own of microphone capture.

App Tracking Transparency is narrower than it sounds

Apple’s developer documentation on User Privacy and Data Use describes App Tracking Transparency as the framework that requires permission for tracking that is covered by Apple’s rules, meaning tracking that links user or device data from one app with data from other companies’ apps or websites. It is not a single switch that controls all data collection or all personalization. An app can still collect and use data within its own service, and some personalization does not fall under the tracking definition at all.

Controls to check, in order

Work through these settings in the order listed. Labels can differ slightly by iOS version and region, so if a name does not match, look for the closest equivalent under Privacy & Security.

  1. Microphone access. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone. Turn off access for any app that does not need to hear you. Remember that the indicator appears only while an app is using the microphone, so an app you rarely open can still be granted access you do not need.
  2. Cross-app tracking. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking. Review the apps listed and turn off tracking for any you do not want following you across other companies’ apps and websites.
  3. Apple’s ad personalization. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Apple Advertising and review the information Apple uses for targeting. You can turn off Personalized Ads there. Apple cautions that doing so may not reduce the number of ads you see; it changes how they are chosen, not how many appear.
  4. Siri and Dictation audio storage. Check whether you have opted in to storing audio and interaction history for Siri and Dictation. The default, as Apple describes it, is that audio is not retained. Opting out later is also documented by Apple.
  5. App privacy details and App Privacy Report. Review the data categories an app declares and the network activity Apple shows you. These are visibility tools. They do not prove that every possible data transfer is displayed or prevented.
  6. Browser and app settings. Reset or delete advertising identifiers where the option exists, and review the privacy settings in each browser and app you use heavily. An ad blocker can reduce some ads and tracking, but it may not block all of either, and the FTC advises people to inspect their permissions and privacy settings as a whole.

What the evidence can and cannot settle

No public source reviewed for this article establishes that iPhones never capture ambient sound in any circumstance. Apple’s statements describe platform policy and default behavior. Independent forensic evidence that would prove a universal negative across every iPhone, app, operating-system version, and recording situation is not available in the material available for this article, so the honest claim is narrower: the documented controls exist, and the documented ad inputs are plausible explanations for relevance.

Some figures in circulation are older than they look. A 2017 Federal Trade Commission staff report on cross-device tracking found that only three of 100 top website privacy policies it reviewed explicitly mentioned third-party cross-device tracking. That is a historical review of website policies. It is not a measure of how iPhone apps or ads are targeted today, and no current, directly applicable figure exists in the sources reviewed for the share of iPhone ads that come from microphone audio.

The Siri eavesdropping lawsuit

The Associated Press reported in January 2025 that Apple had agreed to a proposed $95 million settlement of a lawsuit alleging that Siri recorded conversations inadvertently and that advertisers were given access to the data. The settlement required court approval at the time of that report. The report describes claims and allegations; it does not establish that Apple used Siri audio to target ads. Check the AP’s explainer on the settlement and current court records for its approval status, because this article does not confirm the final outcome.

The useful takeaway is that the microphone question has clear, checkable controls, and the ad question has documented answers that rarely involve your voice. Start with the permissions and Apple Advertising settings above, and judge any individual ad against the activity it most likely followed.
