What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Dashcams wear out memory cards through the repeated writing and overwriting required for continuous recording. That is normal card wear, not by itself evidence that the camera is faulty. If you see a card error, a slow-writing warning, or recording stops, save any footage you need, then troubleshoot the card and replace it if errors persist.
Why dashcams wear out memory cards
When loop recording is enabled, a dashcam continually saves video clips. Once the card fills, it overwrites older footage to make room for new recordings. Flash memory has finite write endurance, so this cycle gradually wears the card. Garmin explains that “All microSD™ memory cards wear out after they are overwritten a large number of times.” Garmin’s guidance on degraded memory cards describes this as expected wear.
A card that is wearing out may slow down, trigger a memory-card error, or stop recording reliably. Garmin lists degrading and slowing-card alerts, while VIOFO identifies recording failures and card errors as problems for which formatting may help. An alert matters because recording may stop or footage may be lost; it does not establish that the camera itself caused a fault.
What to do when the camera reports a card problem
- Save important footage first. Copy any clips you may need to another device before troubleshooting. Formatting removes files stored on the card; it is not a way to recover a missing clip.
- Format the card using the camera maker’s procedure. Formatting can address some recording and card errors. For example, VIOFO explains why and how to format its cards. Follow the procedure for your camera rather than assuming menus or instructions are interchangeable across brands.
- Replace the card if the problem remains or returns. Repeated errors, recording interruptions, or a message that the card is degrading or at end of useful life are reasons to replace it. A new card is not automatically suitable: Garmin notes that a card may be defective or not suited to high-endurance, continuous recording. Choose a compatible high-endurance microSD card for a dashcam, and check your camera’s supported capacity and speed before buying.
Choose a card for your particular camera
There is no single capacity or speed requirement established for every dashcam. Check the camera manufacturer’s compatibility guidance for the model and recording mode you use. Garmin’s Class 10 or higher recommendation applies to the Garmin Dash Cam models covered by its support material, not to all cameras. Its compatibility guidance for Garmin dash cams and camera systems is model-specific.

Similarly, Xiaomi recommends a “high-endurance memory card of 16G C10 or above” for the specified Mi Dashcam slow-writing warning. That is guidance for the covered Xiaomi situation, not a universal minimum. See Xiaomi’s instructions for that slow-writing warning and check your own camera’s requirements.

Manufacturer guidance does not establish a cross-model lifespan figure or prove that one brand will last a fixed number of months or years. Avoid treating a claimed lifespan as guaranteed for your camera and recording habits.
Reduce unnecessary writes
Capacity and power behavior can affect how often footage gets overwritten. Garmin says a higher-capacity card is overwritten less often and usually lasts longer. That does not remove wear or override the camera’s capacity limit: use only a capacity your model supports.

If the camera stays powered while parked, check whether continuous or parking recording is intended. For some Garmin cameras that are not connected to ignition-switched power, Garmin advises turning the camera off when the vehicle is not in use to avoid unnecessary recording. Apply the advice only if it fits your camera’s power setup and parking-recording needs.

Formatting can help with some errors, and VIOFO recommends regular formatting in its product guidance. The cited manufacturers do not establish one schedule that applies to every dashcam. Follow your own camera maker’s instructions, and back up any footage you want to keep before formatting.
