Is wkhtmltopdf still maintained?
No. GitHub marks the core repository archived and read-only as of January 2, 2023, and the wkhtmltopdf organization states that it is no longer maintained. See the core repository and the project organization.
The release records should not be conflated: the core releases page lists version 0.12.6, released June 10 in its release record, while a separate packaging repository lists 0.12.6.1 r3, released May 22, 2023. A packaging revision is not a new upstream core release. Check the core releases and packaging releases for the records relevant to your installation.
Is wkhtmltopdf safe to use?
There is no responsible blanket yes or no for every installation. The available evidence establishes that upstream maintenance has stopped and documents security issues in particular wrappers. It does not establish that every core build is exploitable, that every deployment is unsafe, or that all versions and downstream packages have the same exposure.

Risk is higher when untrusted HTML or user-controlled rendering options can reach the executable, or when the renderer has broad access to files, network resources, or other system capabilities. A renderer exposed to trusted, controlled input inside a restricted process presents a different risk profile. These distinctions are operational guidance, not a guarantee that any particular configuration is safe.
What the release notes do—and do not—say about security
The 0.12.6 release notes include the change “BREAKING CHANGE: block local filesystem access by default.” That is a meaningful default hardening for local file access, but it does not show that every risky input or network behavior is prevented. Do not treat that single change as a security guarantee; review the 0.12.6 release notes alongside the exact build and configuration you run.

Recent security advisories concern wrappers
Catalyst::View::Wkhtmltopdf
A July 2026 advisory describes command injection in affected versions before 0.6.1 when user-controlled render options are passed without validation. The advisory recommends upgrading the wrapper to 0.6.1 or later. It concerns option handling in Catalyst::View::Wkhtmltopdf; it is not evidence that the same flaw exists in the wkhtmltopdf core executable. Read the Openwall advisory.
PDF::WebKit
NVD’s CVE-2026-16770 record concerns PDF::WebKit versions up to 1.2 and describes HTML meta-tag values being converted into wkhtmltopdf command-line options. This is another wrapper-specific issue, not a finding that every installation of the core executable has the same vulnerability. See NVD CVE-2026-16770.

How to decide whether to keep an existing installation
Base the decision on your actual deployment rather than the product name alone. Review these factors before deciding whether to continue using it or migrate:
- Maintenance and patch path: Identify who supplies your binary and whether that downstream package receives its own security fixes. Do not assume a packaging revision is an upstream core release.
- Input and options: Determine whether users can supply HTML, URLs, meta tags, or renderer options. Validate inputs and strictly allowlist any user-controlled options; do not pass arbitrary option strings through a wrapper.
- Process permissions: Restrict filesystem and network access at the process or container level. Do not rely solely on the 0.12.6 local-file default to control all resource access.
- Exposure: Avoid exposing a renderer that handles untrusted input as a broadly accessible service without appropriate isolation and controls.
- Compatibility and migration: Test your templates, fonts, page layout, output, and operational workflow against a replacement before changing production. The evidence here does not establish one universally best alternative.
Practical steps for teams that retain wkhtmltopdf
- Inventory the exact software. Record the binary version, package source and revision, operating system package, wrapper or library, and the options used in production.
- Check wrapper-specific advisories. If you use Catalyst::View::Wkhtmltopdf, verify its version and follow the advisory’s recommendation to use 0.6.1 or later. If you use PDF::WebKit, assess whether the CVE’s affected conditions apply and update or mitigate the wrapper as appropriate.
- Remove untrusted option paths. Prefer fixed, application-controlled renderer options. If options must vary, validate them against a narrow allowlist rather than accepting arbitrary values.
- Constrain the renderer. Run it with only the file and network access it needs, under a restricted account or isolated container. Treat those controls as risk reduction, not proof of safety.
- Plan and test migration. Compare the current output and required features with candidate renderers in your own application. The available evidence does not establish a best replacement, so choose based on compatibility, maintenance, and your threat model.
What is not established
The project archive and cited wrapper advisories do not provide a complete vulnerability inventory for every wkhtmltopdf core build, downstream package, operating system, or runtime configuration. They also do not determine whether a specific installation is exploitable. To make that assessment, you need the exact binary and wrapper versions, input paths, options, and process permissions for your own deployment.
