V/H/S/Mixtape is scheduled to stream on Shudder on October 9, 2026. It brings music and sound to the found-footage anthology format, but Gizmodo reviewer Cheryl Eddy’s October 6 assessment is mixed: “Heartbeat” and the puppetry stand out, while other segments feel predictable or unevenly connected to the format.
What is V/H/S/Mixtape?
V/H/S/Mixtape is the ninth installment in the V/H/S horror franchise, according to AMC Global Media’s announcement. The anthology uses found-footage horror stories linked by a music-and-sound theme, with music-video interludes. AMC describes the concept as exploring “the power of music, rhythm, and audio to haunt, possess, and destroy.”
The film combines horror directors, musicians, performance, and practical effects. The announced segment directors are Ernest Dickerson, RZA, David Moreau, and Renee Zhan. Zhan’s segment features original puppets by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. Flying Lotus directed music-video interludes, Tobias Forge directed a new music video, and GWAR is featured.
When does it come out, and where can you watch it?
Shudder has scheduled the streaming premiere for October 9, 2026; AMC+’s title page also lists a new-movie premiere that day. Availability may depend on your territory and subscription access.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
There is also a specific New York event: IFC Center’s listing schedules a premiere opening October 8, 2026, with a DCP presentation. Its 9:30 p.m. screening includes an extended introduction by Ernest Dickerson. This listing establishes a local premiere, not a general theatrical rollout.
Is V/H/S/Mixtape worth watching?
That depends on what you want from the anthology. Eddy’s Gizmodo review calls the collection “fine but not fantastic”: it finds a few memorable elements but argues that the music concept does not overcome the series’ familiar unevenness. That is one critic’s view, not a consensus or an objective ranking of the franchise.

The entries and elements the review singles out
- “Heartbeat,” directed by David Moreau: Influencers explore a Cold War-era facility in Bulgaria. Eddy calls it “probably the standout entry,” praising its sound-driven, skin-crawling finish.
- Renee Zhan’s “Dance Dance Dance Dance”: The Jim Henson’s Creature Shop puppets and Barbara Crampton give it appeal, though the review finds the story predictable.
- Ernest Dickerson’s “The Music of Mr. Sze”: A student uses camera-equipped glasses to record people without their knowledge, while an eccentric neighbor plays violin. Eddy describes the reveal as wild and suggests the segment feels as if it has more story to tell.
- RZA’s “Death Tone”: A woman makes a memorial track for her deceased producer father through gruesome methods. The review finds it gory but narratively one-note.
Where the music-video idea may not land
The Flying Lotus and Tobias Forge music videos are not presented as found footage, according to Eddy’s account. She questions how they fit the format beyond reinforcing the music theme. That tension matters in a franchise built around the conceit of discovered recordings: a strong mood or visual style may still feel separate from the stories surrounding it.
How does this entry compare with earlier V/H/S films?
Eddy places V/H/S/Mixtape in the franchise’s run of annual entries since V/H/S/94 in 2021. In her framing, recent installments have used distinct organizing ideas: V/H/S/85 used a year-specific frame, V/H/S/Beyond leaned into science fiction, and V/H/S/Halloween drew on Halloween imagery. The series retains its anthology structure while changing the theme that connects its stories.

| Comparison point | What the review says about V/H/S/Mixtape |
|---|---|
| Unifying theme | Music and sound provide a clear hook, but Eddy questions whether the theme inspires the segments as effectively as the concept promises. |
| Use of found footage | Some stories are tied to recording devices and sound, while the music-video interludes are not styled as found footage. |
| Consistency | The review identifies standouts and appealing craft alongside stories it finds predictable or one-note. |
This is a comparison of the latest film’s approach as described in one review, not a comprehensive ranking against every earlier installment. Eddy’s concluding question is whether the music theme proved less inspiring or whether the annual series is entering a creative rut.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the review’s verdict?
Eddy’s concise verdict is that “a few solid entries and a whole lot of Gwar can’t quite elevate the latest entry in the found-footage horror series.” For viewers drawn to sound-led horror, the puppetry, or a particular contributor, those elements may be enough to make the anthology appealing. Viewers looking for consistently inventive stories or a seamless use of found footage may be less persuaded by her assessment.
