Upgrade RAM when the computer runs short of memory during your usual work; replace a spinning hard drive with an SSD when slow drive access is holding it back. Check what is actually limiting the PC before buying: neither upgrade fixes every cause of sluggish performance.
Which upgrade fits the slowdown?
| What you observe | Upgrade to consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Memory use stays high during the tasks that feel slow, especially when several apps are open. | More RAM, if the computer supports it. | RAM holds active apps and files. More capacity can help the PC handle more at once without relying as heavily on slower storage. Microsoft explains this distinction in its computer memory guide. |
| The PC still starts from a traditional spinning hard disk, and startup, app launches, or file access are slow. | Replace the HDD with an SSD, if compatible. | This targets access to programs and files. Kingston describes HDD-to-SSD replacement as an upgrade option in its PC performance guidance. |
| Free storage is low, but there is no clear evidence of slow drive access. | Check and clean up storage before replacing anything. | Low capacity and slow access are different issues; Windows cleanup tools may free space without a new drive. See Microsoft’s free-space guidance. |
| CPU use is consistently high, or neither memory nor disk use explains the delay. | Investigate other causes first. | Startup apps, background processes, software problems, CPU limits, and other hardware constraints can all affect performance. Microsoft’s Windows performance tips cover several possible causes. |
High Memory or Disk use is a clue, not proof that a new component is the right fix. Microsoft lists consistently high CPU, Memory, or Disk use among signs to investigate in its guide to recognizing when a PC may need replacing. Look at what is using the resource and whether the reading coincides with the slowdown.
How to identify the bottleneck in Windows
- Recreate the slowdown. Use the apps and workload that normally feel slow, such as opening several browser tabs or launching a large program. A reading taken while the PC is idle may not reflect the problem.
- Open Task Manager. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, then select Processes. Check the CPU, Memory, and Disk columns while the slowdown is happening. If a column is not visible, right-click a column heading and enable it.
- Check the Performance view. Select Performance in Task Manager and inspect Memory and Disk activity. Note whether memory is nearly full, whether disk activity remains high, and whether the drive is identified as an HDD or SSD.
- Match the evidence to the task. Persistent memory pressure during multitasking supports considering a RAM upgrade. Slow startup and app or file access on an HDD support considering an SSD. If neither pattern appears, do not assume either upgrade is the answer.
- Check free space separately. Open Settings > System > Storage and review Windows’ storage recommendations or Storage Sense options. Freeing space can address a capacity problem; it does not turn an HDD into an SSD.
These checks help narrow the cause, but do not constitute a performance benchmark or guarantee that a particular upgrade will help.
When more RAM is likely to help
RAM is working space for active apps and files. When normal use exceeds the available memory, adding capacity may make multitasking less constrained. It will not, by itself, make a slow HDD behave like an SSD, and extra RAM may do little if the PC has ample memory for its workload.

- MORE COMPATIBLE THAN EVER: 870 EVO has been compatibility tested for major host systems and applications, including chipsets, motherboards, NAS, and video recording devices. Interface- SATA 6GB/s, compatible with SATA 3GB/s and SATA 1.5GB/s interfaces
Microsoft’s broad guidance is to aim for at least 4 GB for browsing, documents, or streaming, 8 GB for longer-term use, and 16 GB or more for editing or demanding projects. These are general recommendations, not a diagnosis, tested upgrade result, or promise for an individual older computer. The useful amount depends on the workload and what the specific machine supports.
Before ordering, confirm the exact computer model, compatible RAM type, maximum supported capacity, and whether its memory can be replaced or expanded. Some laptops have memory soldered to the board or no available slot. Kingston offers a make-and-model memory lookup, but verify the result against the computer maker’s specifications.

When replacing an HDD with an SSD is likely to help
If the operating system is installed on a spinning hard drive, replacing it with a compatible SSD targets drive access during startup and when opening programs or files. This is a different upgrade from adding RAM: it addresses the storage device, not memory capacity.
If the PC already uses an SSD, do not assume that replacing it with another SSD will solve general slowness. First identify a specific drive problem or other bottleneck. Likewise, a nearly full drive is not automatically a slow drive; cleanup may be enough when the issue is capacity rather than access speed.

- UPGRADE WITH EASE: Using the 870 EVO SSD is as simple as plugging it into the standard 2.5 inch SATA form factor on your desktop PC or laptop; The renewed migration software takes care of the rest
Check the machine’s supported drive interface and physical form factor before choosing a replacement. Depending on the computer, the option may be SATA or an M.2 drive, and not every M.2 slot supports NVMe. Confirm the computer maker’s specifications rather than relying on connector appearance alone. Back up important files before replacing or migrating a system drive, and plan how Windows and your data will be transferred or reinstalled.
Check compatibility and Windows support before spending
Identify the exact computer model and verify that its RAM is upgradeable and that the selected drive matches the machine’s supported interface and size. A component that fits physically may still be unsupported, and older systems may impose capacity or configuration limits.

If the upgrade is partly intended to keep the PC on a newer Windows release, assess operating-system eligibility separately. Microsoft’s Windows 11 compatibility guidance lists requirements including a compatible processor, TPM 2.0, at least 4 GB of RAM, and at least 64 GB of storage. Meeting the RAM or storage minimum alone does not make a PC eligible; check Microsoft’s Windows 11 compatibility guidance for the current requirements and the computer’s other hardware criteria.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When neither upgrade is the right first move
- High CPU use: identify the process or workload using the processor; RAM or an SSD may not address it.
- Background or startup activity: review unnecessary apps that launch automatically and processes running during the slowdown.
- Low free space: use Windows storage recommendations and cleanup options before treating the issue as a drive-speed problem.
- Broader hardware limits: a very old processor or other unsupported component can constrain performance even after a storage or memory upgrade. Microsoft notes that older hardware may not gain significantly from software troubleshooting.
- Unclear or persistent symptoms: check for software, driver, or hardware problems before buying parts; a resource reading on its own does not establish the cause.
There is no established universal speedup percentage or head-to-head result that says RAM or an SSD is always the better purchase for older PCs. The practical choice follows the observed bottleneck, the drive already installed, the workload, and the machine’s upgrade limits.
