Yes—but “Google Shopping API” does not mean a public endpoint for searching every consumer product and comparing store prices. Google’s current documented route is the Merchant API, including its Merchant Reports capabilities. These tools let an eligible retailer compare its own offers with Google price benchmarks, inspect price gaps and competitive products, and obtain sale-price suggestions. They are designed for Merchant Center accounts and retailer-authorized users, not for building an unrestricted public shopping-search service.
What Google’s current API actually provides
The Merchant API is Google’s redesign of the Content API for Shopping. It covers account, product, inventory and report management. Its reporting capabilities include product performance, pricing and competitive-environment views.
For price comparison, the important distinction is between two jobs:
- Retailer benchmarking: compare your Merchant Center offer with Google’s benchmark for comparable products.
- Consumer-wide product search: query Google for arbitrary products, stores and prices and return a complete comparison list.
The official documentation covered here establishes the first job. It does not establish a general public API for the second. Do not design a price-comparison site on the assumption that Merchant API is an unrestricted Google Shopping search feed.

What the pricing reports show
Price benchmarks
A benchmark is an average price associated with stronger outcomes in Google’s shopping ecosystem—such as ad auctions, impressions, clicks or conversions—depending on the available data. Google derives benchmark prices from retailers selling the same GTIN in Shopping ads and organic listings.
This is a market reference, not a guaranteed “correct” price. A benchmark can reflect a different seller’s shipping, condition, bundle, tax treatment or stock situation, so use it as a pricing signal rather than an automatic repricing instruction.
Price gaps and distributions
Merchant Center can show whether your offer is cheaper, similar or more expensive than the benchmark. You can identify products or brands with the largest gaps. The reported gap is the percentage difference between your price and the benchmark price.
Competitive product views
The Merchant Reports API view named price_competitiveness_product_view can return fields such as product ID, title, brand, price, report country and benchmark price. Market-insights reporting also covers best-selling products and brands, competitive price points, sale-price suggestions and the industry competitive landscape.

Performance and suggested sale prices
The product_performance_view can report measures including impressions, clicks and click-through rate. The price_insights_product_view provides suggested sale prices and predicted effects.

Google says sale-price suggestions use product ad performance and price sensitivity from the previous seven days, together with data from similar businesses. Purchase conversions must be reported before suggestions are available. Predictions are not guarantees of future results. Google’s documentation also refers to product clicks from the previous 28 days; treat that as the documented reporting window rather than a permanent promise for every account or report.
Three ways to use the data
Merchant Center interface: fastest for manual checks
Use Merchant Center’s pricing analytics when a merchandiser needs to inspect products, brands or price-gap cards without building an integration. This is the practical choice for occasional repricing reviews, category meetings and investigating a small set of products.
Merchant API reports: programmatic queries
Use Merchant API when your application must retrieve eligible reports on a schedule, join benchmark values to an internal catalog or trigger an internal review workflow. Queries use Merchant Center Query Language, and each request can query one report view.
Before coding, decide which view answers the question:
price_competitiveness_product_viewfor product-level prices and benchmarks.product_performance_viewfor impressions, clicks and click-through rate.price_insights_product_viewfor suggested sale prices and predicted effects.
Write the query around the fields documented for that view, then test it against a small date or product scope. Avoid assuming that a field available in one view can be selected from another.

BigQuery integration: preserve history
Google says only the latest prices are available at a given time in its pricing reports. Merchant API and BigQuery integrations can be used to build a price history over time. If you need to answer “when did our gap widen?” or chart benchmark movement, schedule exports and store dated snapshots instead of repeatedly overwriting one table.
Eligibility and setup checklist
- Create or identify the Merchant Center account. You need appropriate permissions for the account and its reports.
- Create a Google Cloud project. Link it to the Merchant Center account before configuring API access.
- Confirm the account type. Merchant Reports is documented for standalone accounts and individual sub-accounts. Google says advanced accounts cannot retrieve reports through this API.
- Check product identifiers. Valid GTINs are required for benchmark data. GTINs also improve sale-price suggestions, although Google says they are not mandatory for suggestions themselves.
- Verify conversion reporting. Purchase conversions must be reported for sale-price suggestions.
- Choose one report view per request. Build and validate the Merchant Center Query Language statement against that view’s schema.
- Plan retention. If trend analysis matters, persist dated results in BigQuery or another warehouse.
- Review data-use terms. Pricing reports are for the retailer’s internal use or parties acting on its behalf.
How to interpret a benchmark without making bad pricing decisions
Match the product before comparing the number
Benchmark data is based on products sharing a GTIN. Confirm that your GTIN identifies the same model, pack size, quantity, condition and variant. Comparing a single item with a multipack can produce a misleading gap even when the identifier or feed data is wrong.
Separate price from total offer value
A lower headline price may include higher shipping, fewer included accessories or a different return policy. Use benchmark data to prioritize investigation, then evaluate delivered price and commercial terms in your own catalog.
Do not treat suggestions as automatic repricing
A suggested sale price is a prediction informed by recent performance and price sensitivity. It does not guarantee additional conversions or profit. Apply margin, inventory, shipping and promotion rules before publishing a change.
Can you use competitor pricing in a public comparison site?
Not on the basis of these retailer reports alone. Google states that Pricing reports are available only for internal use by the retailer or people acting on the retailer’s behalf. Pricing data cannot be resold, publicly displayed, advertised or aggregated across businesses.

That restriction matters even if you can technically export the values. A public database that combines several merchants’ benchmark or pricing data could conflict with those terms. Obtain legal and policy review before exposing any report-derived value outside the retailer’s organization or authorized service provider.

“There is no benchmark for this product”
First check the GTIN, country and product matching. Benchmark data depends on comparable offers sharing a valid GTIN; a missing or invalid identifier can leave the benchmark unavailable.
“The API request is rejected for my account”
Confirm that the account is standalone or an individual sub-account. Advanced accounts cannot retrieve reports through the Merchant Reports API according to Google’s overview. Also verify that the Cloud project is linked to the correct Merchant Center account and that the caller has report permissions.
“My query fails even though the field exists somewhere in the documentation”
Check the selected view. Each request queries one view, and fields are view-specific. Remove fields not supported by that view, then add them back one at a time.
“Sale-price suggestions are missing”
Verify purchase-conversion reporting, sufficient product activity and valid product identifiers. Suggestions use a recent seven-day performance and price-sensitivity window, so a new or low-traffic product may not produce a suggestion.

“Our dashboard shows only today’s value”
That is expected if you are reading the latest report values without retaining snapshots. Schedule Merchant API or BigQuery exports and append a capture date to each record.
“The benchmark looks commercially unrealistic”
Inspect variant, condition, shipping and country alignment. Then check whether the value is an average benchmark rather than a direct competitor quote. Use it to rank products for review, not as proof that every competitor sells at that exact amount.

Is Merchant API the same as the old Content API?
Google describes Merchant API as a redesign of Content API for Shopping. Older Content API reporting pages are marked deprecated, so new work should follow current Merchant API documentation and verify migration requirements.
Does a benchmark tell me the cheapest seller?
No. It is an average benchmark associated with stronger shopping outcomes, based on comparable offers, not a guaranteed lowest-market-price feed.
Can I retrieve reports for an advanced account?
Google’s Merchant Reports overview says advanced accounts cannot retrieve reports through that API.
Are sale-price predictions guaranteed?
No. Google describes them as predictions based on recent performance, price sensitivity and similar businesses.
The Bottom Line
For retailer-side price benchmarking, use Merchant Center pricing analytics or the eligible Merchant API reports, and preserve snapshots in BigQuery when you need history. There is no documented basis here for treating Merchant API as a public, arbitrary Google Shopping price-search service.
