It can be worth buying if you’re comfortable checking compatibility game by game and accepting some setup work. It’s a risky choice if an unsupported game is essential—especially if you rely on its online multiplayer. Before buying, check each must-play title’s Steam Deck Compatibility details, not just its overall badge. Valve’s ratings describe a current review, not a guarantee about every future game update.
What “Unsupported” means on Steam Deck
Valve’s compatibility labels indicate different levels of review, rather than a simple promise that a game will or won’t launch:
- Verified: The game works well on Steam Deck by default.
- Playable: The game works, but may need manual configuration.
- Unsupported: Valve currently does not consider the game playable on Deck.
- Unknown: Valve has not checked the game.
Valve says its review is ongoing and ratings can change as the Deck and game support improve. Treat a rating as a current snapshot, not a permanent verdict. An individual Unsupported or Unknown game may run for some players, but that does not make it a Valve guarantee; results can depend on the game version, settings, and access to online features. Why a game can miss official support
Compatibility is about more than whether the game launches. Valve reviews four areas, so a title can fall short because of an inconvenient launcher or controls as well as a deeper technical problem.

- Display: Support for Deck’s default resolutions and legible text.

- System support: The game and required middleware working through Proton.
That means a fixable control or launcher inconvenience is different from a game that does not function or a required online service that blocks play. Valve’s compatibility criteria describe these review areas.
Proton can help with Windows games, but it cannot guarantee support
SteamOS is Linux-based, and Proton is Valve’s compatibility layer for running Windows games on Linux. Its existence does not mean every Windows game will work. Valve says Proton supports some anti-cheat middleware, including Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye, but developers must configure and enable that support for their games. Valve also says kernel-space anti-cheat solutions are not currently supported. Even when a game launches, its online service must allow play through Proton for multiplayer to work. For a game you need to play online, verify the specific title and service rather than assuming that support for an anti-cheat product means the game’s anti-cheat is enabled. A workaround or Proton setting is not a promise of reliable functionality, performance, updates, or online access.
How to check your games before buying
- Make a must-play list. Include games you expect to play regularly, plus any multiplayer features you depend on.
- Open each game’s Steam Store page. Read its Steam Deck Compatibility section as well as the overall badge. Valve says the detail panel explains which Verified requirements a game does not meet.
- Decide whether any issue is manageable. A launcher that needs touchscreen input or a controller configuration change may be acceptable. A nonfunctional game or blocked required multiplayer service is a more serious barrier.
- For a Steam game that is not working, use Steam Support’s troubleshooting guidance. In the game’s Properties > Compatibility settings, you can force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool; Support suggests trying the latest Proton version. Steam may also download the Windows build if only the Linux version was installed. These are troubleshooting steps, not guarantees. - Recheck the title over time. Game, Proton, and SteamOS updates can affect compatibility, and Valve’s ratings may change.
When the Steam Deck is a sensible or risky buy
The decision depends on the games you care about, the features you need, and how much tinkering you’re willing to do. If your library is mostly Verified or Playable games and occasional setup is acceptable, an unsupported title need not rule out the Deck. If an essential game is Unsupported or Unknown, or you need multiplayer that depends on unenabled anti-cheat, do not base the purchase on a hypothetical future fix. Wait for current, title-specific evidence or choose a way to play that is known to support that game.

If you compare the Deck with another way to play your library, check must-play coverage title by title, multiplayer and anti-cheat, setup effort, handheld readability and performance, and how dependable the compatibility evidence is. An informal workaround may stop working after an update; no blanket compatibility claim can settle the comparison for every game.
