The Solar System is chaotic in the technical sense, but that does not mean it is about to fall apart: simulations find the planets statistically stable over billions of years, with a small modeled chance of major disruption. Separately, the Sun is expected to become a red giant in roughly five billion years. Earth will lose habitability well before then; whether it is physically engulfed is uncertain.
Is the Solar System unstable?
In astronomy, “chaotic” does not mean random or already collapsing. It means that tiny differences in the planets’ starting positions and motions can grow over time until their exact future orbits can no longer be predicted reliably. A 2022 study by Hoang, Mogavero and Laskar puts the inner planets’ Lyapunov time—the characteristic timescale for that loss of predictability—at about five million years. That is a limit on precise forecasts, not a countdown to a collision.
Despite this orbital chaos, numerical studies find the inner Solar System statistically stable over timescales of billions of years. Most modeled paths do not lead to a dramatic rearrangement of the terrestrial planets.
What the simulations say about rare instability
In a 2009 study, Jacques Laskar and Mickaël Gastineau integrated 2,501 possible orbital solutions over five billion years. The simulations included the Moon and general relativity. About one percent showed Mercury’s orbital eccentricity growing substantially, enough to make a collision with Venus or the Sun possible. This is the fraction of modeled solutions that followed that path—not a guarantee that the real Solar System will do so, nor a precise forecast of when a collision will occur.

One rare simulated trajectory went further: the terrestrial planets became destabilized, allowing possible collisions involving Earth after about 3.34 billion years of simulated evolution. It demonstrates a possible route to disruption, not the expected fate of Earth.
Does orbital chaos mean Earth will be destroyed?
No. The simulations describe a low-probability route to orbital disruption, not an approaching event. A large change in Mercury’s orbit could result in a collision involving Mercury, Venus or the Sun; only some modeled trajectories destabilize the other terrestrial planets as well. The distinction matters: chaos makes exact long-range prediction difficult, but it does not make every outcome equally likely.

Earth’s ability to support life is a separate question from whether the planet itself survives. NASA’s educational material estimates that the oceans may begin evaporating and surface organic life may end about two billion years from now as the Sun brightens. That is a broad educational timescale, not a precise countdown. NASA describes increasing solar luminosity as warming Earth and contributing to water loss and a runaway greenhouse, potentially making the planet uninhabitable before the Sun reaches its red-giant stage.
What will happen when the Sun becomes a red giant?
NASA’s 2026 account estimates that the Sun will run out of hydrogen in its core in approximately five billion years and expand to more than 100 times its present size as it becomes a red giant. It will later shed its outer layers and become a white dwarf. This stellar evolution is expected; the exact fate of each planet is less certain.

Earth’s physical fate is not settled
NASA says Mercury and Venus, and possibly Earth, may be destroyed during the Sun’s red-giant transformation. The word “possibly” is important: Earth’s eventual physical engulfment is not established as certain. Losing habitability as the Sun brightens is a different outcome from being swallowed or destroyed during the red-giant phase.
The outer planets have a less certain future
NASA says the fate of the more distant planets, particularly the gas giants, is unclear. The Sun’s expansion does not by itself establish that those planets will be destroyed. Their future should not be conflated with the possible destruction of the inner planets.

How the two kinds of “doom” differ

So “doomed” describes a broad far-future prospect, not an imminent catastrophe or a single certain event. Orbital instability is a possible outcome of chaotic dynamics; the Sun’s transformation is expected, while the exact fate of Earth remains open.
