A screenshot is the image produced by capturing what is on your display. On Windows, pressing Print Screen can create that image, but whether it is copied to the clipboard or opens a snipping selection depends on your Windows setting.
What the Print Screen key actually does
Print Screen is an instruction to the operating system to capture screen content. The resulting screenshot is a bitmap image held temporarily in memory or saved as a file, depending on the shortcut you use. The key itself is not the image.
Microsoft describes the traditional single-key behavior as capturing the entire screen and copying it to the Clipboard. You then paste it with Ctrl+V into Paint, Word, an email, or another application. Current Windows shortcut guidance also documents a configurable behavior in which pressing PrtScn opens screen snipping so you can select an area. Both descriptions can be correct on different Windows installations.
To see which behavior your computer uses, press the key once. If a complete display image is available after you press Ctrl+V, it used clipboard capture. If a dimmed overlay and snipping controls appear, Windows is using the screen-snipping behavior.

Print Screen versus a screenshot: the useful distinction

Which Windows shortcut should you use?
Capture the whole display and save it as a file
- Press Windows+Print Screen.
- Open Pictures, then open the Screenshots folder.
- Look for the newly created image file.
This is the most direct choice when you need a persistent full-screen file rather than a temporary clipboard image.
Capture the whole display to the Clipboard
- Press Print Screen by itself if your Windows configuration uses the traditional action.
- Open the destination application.
- Press Ctrl+V to paste the capture.
If pressing the key opens a selection overlay instead, choose the full-screen option in the snipping controls or use Windows+Print Screen for a saved file.
Capture a selected rectangle or another region
- Press Windows+Shift+S.
- Choose the rectangular, window, full-screen, or freeform capture mode shown by Snipping Tool.
- Select the area you need.
- Use the notification or open Snipping Tool to mark up, crop, save, or share the image. The initial capture is copied to the Clipboard, so Ctrl+V also works in another application.
This shortcut is usually the fastest way to capture only part of a page, dialog, or monitor without including unrelated content.
Capture only the active window
- Click the window you want to capture so it is active.
- Press Alt+Print Screen.
- Paste the result with Ctrl+V into the application where you want to use it.
Microsoft documents this shortcut as copying the active window’s image rather than the entire desktop.

Why does my Print Screen key behave differently?
The Windows setting that redirects Print Screen
Windows includes a setting that can make the Print Screen key open screen snipping instead of silently copying a full-screen image. To check it, open Settings, choose Accessibility, select Keyboard, and look for the option that controls whether the Print Screen key opens screen snipping. Turn that option off if you want the traditional single-key clipboard behavior; leave it on if you prefer selecting a region immediately.

Because this option is configurable, instructions that say “Print Screen always captures the entire screen” are incomplete. The shortcut, its destination, and the visible response can vary with that setting.
Clipboard versus saved-file confusion
A clipboard capture does not automatically appear in a folder. You must paste it somewhere and save it from that application. Windows+Print Screen is the shortcut that Microsoft documents for saving a full-screen image under Pictures/Screenshots. If you cannot find a file after pressing Print Screen alone, check the Clipboard by opening Paint or another image-capable app and pressing Ctrl+V.
Snipping Tool gives you more than one capture mode
Snipping Tool supports rectangular, window, full-screen, and freeform image captures. After a capture, you can annotate or crop it before saving. This makes it a better fit than a full-screen Print Screen capture when the screenshot needs explanation or redaction.

What happens on a Chromebook?
Print Screen is not a universal cross-platform shortcut. Google documents ChromeOS capture controls based on the Screenshot key or the Show windows key, not Windows’ Print Screen workflow.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Show windows to open Chromebook capture options.
- On a keyboard without a Show windows key, Google documents Ctrl+Shift+F5 as a substitute.
- Chromebook capture choices include the full screen, a partial screen, and a window.
- Google also documents Ctrl+Show windows for a screenshot and Shift+Ctrl+Show windows for a partial capture.
The practical lesson is to follow the shortcut for your operating system rather than assuming a key labeled Print Screen has identical behavior everywhere. This article does not prescribe macOS or Linux shortcuts because those platform details are outside the documented Windows and ChromeOS guidance covered here.

Common problems and fixes
Nothing appears when I paste
- Try the capture again, then immediately press Ctrl+V in Paint or another image-capable application.
- If an overlay appeared, complete the Snipping Tool selection first; the image is copied after you finish the selection.
- For a guaranteed saved file, use Windows+Print Screen and check Pictures/Screenshots.
I expected a file, but only the Clipboard changed
Print Screen and Alt+Print Screen are documented as Clipboard-oriented actions. Paste the result and save it from the destination app, or use Windows+Print Screen when you want Windows to create the file directly.
Print Screen suddenly opens a selection overlay
The screen-snipping setting is enabled. Open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and change the option controlling the Print Screen key if you want the traditional behavior. You can also keep the setting and use Windows+Print Screen for a full-screen file.
The screenshot includes too much of the desktop
Use Windows+Shift+S and select a rectangle, or use Alt+Print Screen for the active window. These choices reduce the need to crop confidential or unrelated material later.
I cannot find the image after using Windows+Print Screen
Open your user Pictures folder and then Screenshots. If you used a different shortcut, check the Clipboard instead; not every Print Screen action creates a file.
