Yes—if you find a used or discounted original Nintendo Switch meaningfully cheaper than a Switch 2 and mainly want to play compatible Switch games. What makes the original Switch worth considering?
The original Switch gives you access to a substantial existing game library, and Nintendo’s latest fiscal report shows that software for it continues to sell. Nintendo recorded 136.91 million Switch software units sold in FY2026, which ended March 31, 2026, and forecast 105 million Switch software units for FY2027. The original system is most compelling when the price difference is large enough to matter to you. Switch 2 can play compatible Switch games, so a new buyer does not necessarily need the original console to access the older library. When is Switch 2 the better buy?
You want Switch 2 exclusives or newer features

The price gap is small
For US buyers, Nintendo’s May 2026 investor presentation says the Switch 2 MSRP becomes $499.99 on September 1, 2026; US prices exclude tax. For other regions, and for used original Switch consoles, compare current local listings rather than relying on an older guide or a price seen elsewhere. The value depends on the actual total cost and what is included; there is no verified universal price cutoff.

Games and backward compatibility
Switch 2 plays Nintendo Switch games, but Nintendo cautions that certain games may not be supported or fully compatible. Verify each important title rather than assuming every game works identically.
Dock and Joy-Con
The original Switch dock does not work with Switch 2. Original Joy-Con can connect wirelessly to Switch 2, but cannot attach to it. If you are moving from one system to the other, account for those differences when comparing what you already own with what a listing includes. Who should buy the original Switch?
- Consider it if you mainly want games already released for Switch, the used or discounted system is substantially cheaper than Switch 2 where you live, and you do not need Switch 2 exclusives or features.
- Choose Switch 2 instead if you want its exclusive software, prefer buying the current generation, or find that the price difference is too small to justify older hardware.
