Preliminary teardown analysis from TechInsights identifies the iPhone 18 Pro’s Apple A20 Pro processor as manufactured on TSMC’s N2 process, commonly called 2nm. That is a teardown finding, not an Apple announcement, and TechInsights says its analysis is ongoing. The finding supports the device-specific claim more strongly than an earlier analyst forecast, but it does not establish a particular speed, battery-life, or temperature improvement.
What the iPhone 18 Pro teardown found
In a September 22, 2026 report, semiconductor analysis firm TechInsights said its preliminary teardown of the iPhone 18 Pro identified an Apple A20 Pro manufactured using TSMC N2. TechInsights is continuing to analyze the processor, so the identification should be treated as a preliminary teardown finding rather than an official Apple specification. Read TechInsights’ analysis.
The distinction between designer and manufacturer matters: Apple designs the A20 Pro application processor, while TSMC fabricates it using its N2 process, according to TechInsights. “2nm” is shorthand for a process generation; it should not be read as a literal measurement of every transistor feature.
What TSMC’s 2nm process means
N2 uses nanosheet transistors
TSMC describes N2 as its second-generation nanosheet transistor technology. TechInsights explains that the gate surrounds stacked nanosheet channels on all four sides, an architecture known as gate-all-around. Compared with FinFET structures, this provides greater electrostatic control over the channel and may help reduce leakage while supporting performance and energy efficiency.

Those are design-level possibilities, not a guarantee of a particular experience in a phone. The architecture may help chip designers manage computing performance, power use, heat and limited space, but the available teardown analysis does not include controlled iPhone benchmarks.
TSMC’s process projections are not iPhone results
In its July 18, 2024 earnings call, TSMC projected that N2 would deliver 10–15% greater speed at the same power, 25–30% lower power at the same speed, and more than 15% greater chip density compared with N3E. Those are TSMC’s process-level projections against the stated N3E baseline—not measured A20 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro results. See TSMC’s Q2 2024 earnings-call materials.

When TSMC began making N2 chips
TSMC’s 2025 annual report says N2 entered high-volume manufacturing in the fourth quarter of 2025, with the company expecting a fast ramp in 2026. This establishes the foundry’s production timeline, but the annual-report passage does not name Apple or the A20 Pro. The link between N2 and the iPhone 18 Pro comes from TechInsights’ later preliminary teardown analysis. Read TSMC’s 2025 annual report.
What TechInsights reports about the A20 Pro’s layout
Estimated compute-die size and neural processing
TechInsights preliminarily estimates the A20 Pro compute die at approximately 8.0 mm × 12.3 mm, or 98.2 mm². It says the die is nearly the same size as the preceding A19 Pro and appears to devote more area to neural processing. These are estimates and observations from its ongoing analysis, not Apple-published specifications.

Side-by-side memory packaging
TechInsights also reports a change from a package-on-package arrangement, with memory stacked above the processor, to a wafer-level multi-chip module in which the A20 Pro and memory sit side by side. Its preliminary analysis indicates a 96-bit LPDDR5X memory interface. The company suggests the packaging could help heat transfer and provide a wider memory interface, but neither benefit is established as a measured improvement in everyday use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the finding apply to every iPhone 18 model?
No conclusion about the entire iPhone 18 lineup follows from a teardown of the iPhone 18 Pro. The cited device-specific evidence concerns that Pro model. An earlier forecast by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, reported by MacRumors on September 19, 2024, predicted 2nm chips for Pro models, with cost as a possible constraint. That forecast is historical context, not confirmation of chip configurations across the lineup. Read MacRumors’ report on Kuo’s forecast.

What is confirmed—and what remains unmeasured
- Supported by preliminary teardown: TechInsights identifies the A20 Pro in an iPhone 18 Pro as using TSMC N2.
- Confirmed by TSMC: N2 entered high-volume manufacturing in Q4 2025; this milestone does not identify customers or products.
- Not established by the cited evidence: a specific A20 Pro speed gain, longer iPhone battery life, lower operating temperature, or the chip process used by every iPhone 18 model.
For practical performance comparisons, the relevant evidence would be device-level testing of speed, power use, battery life and thermals under comparable conditions. TSMC’s process projections and a preliminary teardown do not provide that comparison.
