It can be worth buying if you will use its automatic heat adjustment near the scalp, remembered settings for compatible attachments, or automatic pause behavior—and if the current local price and bundle make sense. If you mainly want a hair dryer for ordinary drying, already have a Supersonic, or expect its scalp-health marketing to guarantee a result, the Nural is harder to justify.
What makes the Supersonic Nural different?
Dyson’s three signature additions are Scalp protect mode, Attachment learning, and Pause detect. They add automatic adjustments and convenience to the drying routine; they do not, by themselves, establish a guaranteed hair- or scalp-health outcome.
Scalp protect mode
Dyson says a Time of Flight sensor measures the dryer’s distance from the head and lowers the heat as it approaches. The mode is available with specified compatible attachments, and it can override custom heat settings. The US product page names the Gentle air attachment and Styling concentrator; check the Nural user guide and local product listing for compatibility in your market.
Attachment learning
The dryer recognizes compatible magnetic styling attachments and remembers settings for them, according to Dyson. Older Supersonic attachments physically fit the Nural, but Dyson says they do not support Attachment learning. Physical fit therefore does not mean every smart feature will work.
#1 Best Overall
- A new network of Nural sensors within the machine activate intelligent features automatically to optimize your styling routine.
- Scalp protect mode automatically adjusts air temperature to maintain an optimal target temperature of 130°F at the scalp for comfortable, close-up drying.²
- Attachment learning recognizes each attachment and remembers your styling preferences. New, intelligent attachments automatically adjust to your preferred airflow and heat settings for easier styling.³
- Pause detect knows when you’ve paused styling. When no motion is detected, the machine will automatically switch off the heater and reduce airflow. When it’s picked back up, it’s reactivated.
- Capsule illumination changes color to indicate what heat setting you are in, so you always know how much heat you’re using. Clear endcap lets you see Dyson’s pioneering technology at work.
Pause detect
Dyson says the dryer reduces airflow when you put it down. This may be useful if you regularly pause to section hair or change tools, but it is a convenience feature rather than a reason to expect a particular styling result.
How much does it cost, and what comes in the box?
Price and bundle depend on market, color, and date. At the time of the cited price check, a Dyson US Prussian Blue/Rich Copper listing showed $379.99 alongside a crossed-out $449.99 price. That is a page-specific observation, not a stable MSRP or a current-price promise. TechRadar’s 2025 comparison cited a US list price of $499.99, underscoring why buyers should verify the current local listing and bundle before comparing value.
The cited US listing includes five magnetic attachments. Dyson India’s described package lists the Gentle air attachment, Styling concentrator, Smoothing nozzle, Diffuser, and Flyaway smoother. These examples are not a universal package list: confirm the exact contents for the variant you intend to buy.
Who is the Nural worth buying for?
- People who dry close to the scalp: Scalp protect mode’s distance-based heat adjustment may be useful if you want the dryer to change heat automatically rather than manage distance and settings yourself.
- People who switch attachments often: Attachment learning is most relevant if you use compatible magnetic tools and value remembered settings.
- People who set the dryer down during styling: Pause detect may suit routines with frequent breaks to section hair or change tools.
- First-time premium-dryer buyers: The Nural may make sense if these features matter to your routine and its current local price is acceptable.
Its case is weaker if you are satisfied with an existing dryer, would rarely use these features, or already own a Supersonic and see little value in the sensor additions. That is a feature-based buying judgment, not a prediction that every user will get the same results.

What are the main limitations?
The price is variable
Past list prices and discounts do not establish what you should pay today. Compare the actual local price with the alternatives you are considering, and compare like-for-like bundles.
Scalp protect mode has compatibility limits
Dyson specifies that the mode works with particular attachments; compatibility may differ across regional documentation and packages. Check the guide and product page for your exact market, and remember that the mode can take precedence over custom heat settings.
Older attachments lose a smart feature
Earlier Supersonic attachments fit the Nural, according to Dyson, but do not work with Attachment learning. If you plan to reuse existing tools, distinguish compatibility in the physical sense from support for the Nural’s setting memory.
Health-related marketing is not a guarantee
Dyson makes claims about scalp barrier, shine, flakes, shedding, oils, and avoiding heat damage. These are manufacturer claims, not evidence of a guaranteed or universal clinical outcome. The cited independent coverage is a hands-on comparison, not a controlled clinical trial or a long-term durability study.

How should you compare it with another dryer?
Start with the price gap and the features you will actually use. Then check whether the included tools suit your hair and styling needs, and whether any attachments you already own support the functions you want. For the earlier Supersonic, the key question is whether the Nural’s sensor features justify the upgrade for your routine.
For the Supersonic r, compare ergonomics, configurations, current prices, and the styling needs that matter to you. TechRadar’s 2025 hands-on comparison favored the Nural over the r for most people in that reviewer’s assessment; it is one publication’s test and opinion, not a universal ranking.
Verdict
The Nural is easiest to justify when its specific conveniences—distance-based heat adjustment, setting memory for compatible tools, or reduced airflow when set down—will make a difference in your routine. If those features are unlikely to matter, or the price premium is difficult to justify, a less feature-focused option may be a better fit. Check the current local price and exact package before deciding.
