Some manufacturers assign the marked wire to negative; others use it for positive. Check the equipment or cable documentation, then keep the same conductor connected to the same polarity at both ends.
What the stripe tells you—and what it doesn’t
On ordinary two-conductor speaker cable, a stripe, ridge, printed text, or different insulation color helps distinguish one conductor from the other. By itself, that marking does not establish a universal polarity.
Manufacturer instructions illustrate the disagreement: Harman’s Infinity Reference RS Series manual says the ridged or coded side is usually considered negative, while Monoprice’s cable manual says the identified conductor is usually used for positive. These are product-specific conventions, not a rule to apply to every cable.
How to connect speaker wire correctly
- Turn off the amplifier or receiver. Follow its manual before making or changing connections.
- Find the polarity markings. Locate the + and − terminals on both the amplifier and the speaker. Use those labels as your reference rather than assuming a wire color determines polarity.
- Choose a conductor to track. Follow the stripe, ridge, printing, or color along the cable so you can identify the same wire at each end. If the equipment documentation assigns that conductor a polarity, follow it.
- Keep the mapping consistent. Connect the conductor assigned to amplifier + to speaker +, and the other conductor to − at both ends. Repeat that mapping for each speaker.
- Prepare the ends as the product manual directs. For example, an Origin Acoustics manual specifies stripping 6–12 mm (¼–½ inch) and twisting the strands. That instruction is for the documented product; check your own equipment’s instructions.
What if one speaker is wired in reverse?
If one speaker’s polarity is reversed relative to another, the speakers may work but sound different from what you expect. Rotel’s C8/C8+ owner’s manual warns that reversed polarity can make bass output very weak and degrade stereo imaging. Check that every speaker uses the same +/− mapping before troubleshooting other sound issues.

- SIMPLE INSTALL: Black line on one side of wire indicates the polarity for a proper audio system set up
- EASY DISPENSING: Comes wrapped around a hard plastic spool for simple dispensing
Car-audio harness colors are model-specific
Do not apply a generic speaker-cable convention to a supplied vehicle harness. Use the pinout for the exact model, and verify the vehicle-side wiring separately.
- In the cited Garmin Fusion harness instructions, white is positive and white with a black stripe is negative.
- Sony’s documented 16-pin harness instructions assign black-striped speaker leads to negative, while warning that vehicle-side wire colors may differ.
These examples apply to the specified harnesses, not necessarily to another stereo, vehicle, or adapter.

Replacing cable: what to check
Choose two-conductor cable whose markings make the conductors easy to tell apart, then follow the requirements for your amplifier and speakers. Gauge recommendations depend on the equipment and cable-run length. For its Infinity RS Series, Harman says #18 gauge generally and #16 for runs over 25 feet; that is guidance for that product series, not a universal specification.
