The common U.S. residential 120/240-volt service is single-phase, three-wire service, also called split-phase—not two-phase. Two hot wires come from opposite ends of one transformer winding, with a center-tap neutral between them. Each hot-to-neutral connection supplies 120 volts; hot-to-hot supplies 240 volts.

Why does a single-phase service have two hot wires?

The service transformer has one secondary winding with a connection at its midpoint, called a center tap. That center tap is grounded and serves as the neutral. The two hot conductors connect to opposite ends of the same winding.

Each end of the winding is 120 volts from the center tap, so either hot wire paired with neutral supplies 120 volts. Across the two ends—the full winding—the voltage is 240 volts. The hot legs have opposite instantaneous polarity, but they are not independent phases. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Electrical Science handbook calls this the “3-wire, single-phase Edison system” and describes the center-tapped arrangement.

How is split-phase different from two-phase power?

“Split-phase” describes how the single transformer winding provides two 120-volt legs around a shared neutral. The legs are opposite ends of that winding; their existence does not make the supply two-phase. For the common household service, the accurate terms are single-phase, three-wire or split-phase, rather than “two phases.” Siemens’ meter-mounting reference describes typical U.S. residential power and the same 120- and 240-volt relationships.

  • NON-CONTACT DETECTION of AC voltage in cables, cords, circuit breakers, lighting fixtures, switches, non-tamper-resistant outlets, and wires
  • CLEAR INDICATION: Bright LED illuminates green to indicate tester is operational and flashes red and emits a beeping alert when voltage is detected
  • BROAD APPLICATION with a 50 to 1000V AC power detection range
  • CONSERVE BATTERIES with auto power-off function
  • LIGHTWEIGHT AND DURABLE compact design with a convenient clip fits securely in pocket; 6.6-Foot (2 m) drop protection

How does it compare with three-phase 120/208-volt service?

Not every U.S. building receives the common residential 120/240-volt arrangement. Some premises use three-phase service, commonly with three phase conductors and a neutral in a wye arrangement. In that configuration, phase-to-neutral is 120 volts and phase-to-phase is 208 volts—not the split-phase relationship of 120 volts hot-to-neutral and 240 volts hot-to-hot.

The Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center notes this distinction for Level 2 electric-vehicle charging: equipment may receive 240 volts from single-phase service or 208 volts from three-phase service. Its guidance is specific to charging infrastructure, but it illustrates why the type of service depends on the building and application.

Klein Tools 80025 Outlet Tester Kit, 2-Piece
  • SMART BUY: A complete, high-performance kit that offers convenience and value
  • COMPLETE OUTLET TESTER TOOL KIT: Includes GFCI Tester (Cat. No. RT210) and Non-Contact Voltage Tester Pen (Cat. No. NCVT1P)
  • DETECT COMMON WIRING PROBLEMS: Quickly identifies wiring issues in standard and GFCI receptacles
  • GFCI OUTLET COMPATIBLE: Confirms the proper operation of ground fault protective devices in GFCI outlets
  • VOLTAGE TESTER PEN: Non-contact detection of voltage in cables, circuit breakers, lighting fixtures, switches, and more

For the typical residential 120/240-volt question, the key distinction is the transformer topology: two hot legs of one center-tapped winding are still one phase. A building with three-phase service is a different arrangement.

KAIWEETS Voltage Tester/Non-Contact Voltage Tester with Signal Percentage, Dual Range AC 12V/70V-1000V, Live/Null Wire Tester, Electrical Tester with LCD Display, Buzzer Alarm, Wire Breakpoint Finder
  • SAFETY FIRST: It will send out multiple alarms through sound and light. When the voltage is detected, the tip will send out red light and beep. When the higher the sensed voltage is, or the closer it is to the voltage source, it beeps at a higher frequency and the percentage value will be larger. At the same time, the screen will be red or green, red means high voltage and live wire are detected, green means low voltage and null wire are detected
  • NON-CONTACT: With NCV inductive probe for AC voltage; Just place the tip near a terminal strip, outlet, or supply cord. When the tip glows red and the pen beeps, you know there's voltage present. The live wire detector can automatically detect the live or neutral wire. Ideal for breakpoint Test. Handy circuit tester for electricians, homeowners
  • DUAL RANGE: Detects standard and low voltage (12-1000V AC / 70-1000V AC) for more sensitive and flexible measurements. Press the S button to adjust sensitivity and adapt low range for doorbells, thermostats, irrigation wiring etc.; The NCV sensor automatically recognizes the voltage and displays it on the bar graph, and the percentage value can display the voltage signal intensity more intuitively
  • SECURITY LEVEL: IEC rated CAT III 1000V CAT IV 600V, Meets CE requirements; The electrical tester is safely double insulated. High Voltage Alert to warn you of voltage above 90V, the screen turn red and the safety symbol on the screen shines
  • COMPACT DESIGN: Bright LED flashlight for work in dim ares; Low-Power-Indicator when battery voltage is below 2.5V; Automatic Power Off after 5 minutes without operation or signal detection; Pocket-sized, pen hook allows you to carry it in your shirt pocket.
