It is not boxing on its own: an engineer wearing VR goggles controls its movements through a tether. The clip shows a person operating a robot that can punch training pads and move evasively—not an autonomous machine choosing to fight.
What happens in the boxing video?
The footage, covered by Futurism on December 2, 2023, shows Nadia striking training pads worn by a human participant and making evasive movements. The montage is set to music from Mortal Kombat, which makes the demonstration look like a fight scene. But the person operating Nadia is nearby, wearing VR goggles, and the operator’s controller movements are transmitted to the robot through a tether.
That distinction matters: the clip demonstrates human-controlled movement through a responsive interface. It does not show Nadia independently identifying an opponent, deciding when to strike, or engaging in autonomous combat.
What is the Nadia robot?
Nadia is a humanoid research platform developed by the Florida Institute for Human & Machine Cognition (IHMC Robotics) with Boardwalk Robotics and other collaborators. IHMC describes Nadia as a legacy platform for research into mobility, manipulation, behavior, perception, and teleoperation. Its name references gymnast Nadia Comăneci. IHMC’s Nadia project page describes the platform and its design.

- Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots deliver hard-hitting fun for over 40 years!
- The classic boxing match pits Red Rocker versus Blue Bomber in the ring.
- The game has one key aim be the first to knock your opponent’s block off!
- Kids will have a blast battling it out with realistic sounds and jaw-jolting action.
- For 2 players.
IHMC says Nadia has 29 joints, giving it a broad range of motion. Its actuation combines electric and hydraulic systems, including Moog Integrated Smart Actuators, custom electric actuators, and commercial arm actuators. That combination and the robot’s articulated body allow it to make whole-body movements that look more natural than a simple arm-and-leg mechanism.
How does someone control Nadia?
Nadia’s VR teleoperation system lets a human operator direct the robot remotely. The operator wears a VR headset and moves controllers; those movements are transmitted to Nadia through a tether. IHMC describes the system as low-latency, enabling direct control during challenging manipulation tasks. In the boxing footage, the operator—not an onboard decision-making system—is driving the robot’s actions.

- Build two boxing robots that are powered by hydraulics!
- Learn about the physics, design, and components of hydraulic (water-powered) mechanisms, including gears, cylinders, and pistons.
- The upper and lower body move independently to simulate real-life movements, allowing these boxing bots to dodge, jab, and punch with accuracy.
- Kit includes the parts to build two boxing bots plus a scoreboard so that you can challenge a friend to a hydraulic robot battle.
- Introduces important physics and engineering lessons through a fun, hands-on building project with a big punch!
The demo is visually striking because boxing pads make movement easy to see. Punching and evading involve balance, coordinated movement across the body, and timely responses from the operator. The footage illustrates those capabilities under human control; it does not establish autonomous perception or decision-making.
Why build a robot that can move this way?
IHMC designed Nadia for indoor and urban settings where stairs, ladders, and debris can make wheeled robots less useful. The broader goal is to develop robots that can work in places too dangerous for people, including firefighting, disaster response, nuclear remediation, and explosive-ordnance disposal. IHMC’s October 5, 2022 announcement said the project received a $3 million Office of Naval Research grant in summer 2022.

A fun, competitive and additive game of strategy, skill and chance. Provide your kids more exciting leisure time and release the excess energy of the child.
- 【VS Machine】: You can also play in single-player mode versus the machine by switching to Switch 1. It's a great way for your child to release extra energy on his own. There are 5 levels of difficulty in single-player mode combat, beat each level and move on for a more difficult challenge. In single-player mode, Position 1 is for the machine and Position 2 is for the player.
- 【So Many Uses】: You will want to take this everywhere! Have a good time at your home, office, travel or anywhere, anytime---- The toy can be set on any desktop, tabletop or floor to play. Have fun and enjoy this boxing game at any time with a battle activity that is suitable for kids, children, adults, and anyone. Bring excitement to you, your kids and the whole family.
- 【Easy Assemble】: Insert the boxer heels first into the empty slot in the base. Then, push the front down as well. To remove the boxer, simply pull his head back and he will pop out of the base. 4 AA batteries required; battery compartment is located on the underside of the base.
- 【Gift Choice】: Great as a party game, for indoor games, lawn games, camping games, Christmas games and even tailgating games. Warmly gift for birthday parties, festivals and holidays (Children’s Day, Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving & New Years). Give your child a gift that creates endless happy moments.
Senior Research Scientist Robert Griffin described one aim of the effort: “We hope to use this design to enable multicontact motions, where the robot can use any part of its body to make contact with the world, as well as survive falls in the long run.”

IHMC later said Nadia’s boxing and VR work served as a testbed for the Alex humanoid and for software involving behavior, perception, and teleoperation. In 2025, IHMC presented Alex as its next-generation platform, informed by Nadia’s structural design, behavior capabilities, perception sensing, and VR teleoperation. The IHMC announcement about Alex describes that development.
