Check the exact edition, version, artifact, dependencies, and intended use against the license that applies to them. Terminal searches can help you find those details, but they cannot make the licensing decision for you.
This is a product-neutral method: the title does not identify a particular data grid, release, or deployment. “Free” can mean no purchase price, permission to use or modify the software, permission to redistribute it, access to particular features, or vendor support. Treat those as separate questions.
What determines whether a data grid is free for your project?
Start with the software you will actually use—not just the product name. Identify its edition and version, whether it is a vendor binary or a build from source, the dependencies it brings in, and how you plan to use and distribute it. Then read the license and notices that apply to those exact components and compare them with the vendor’s documentation for that release.
In particular, check whether the terms cover your intended commercial use, modification, redistribution, and deployment. Also check whether a feature you need belongs to a paid edition, and whether you need a support or maintenance commitment. These are related but distinct questions: an open-source license does not promise vendor support, and a free edition may have conditions.

How to inspect a project from the terminal
Run these discovery commands from your project root. They help locate license files, dependency declarations, repositories, and edition clues; they do not interpret the terms or prove that the software is free.

Adapt the file list for your package manager and inspect any vendored source, archive, container image, or separately supplied license material used by your deployment.

For Maven and Gradle projects
Record the exact group, artifact, and version for the data grid. For Maven, use mvn dependency:tree to inspect the resolved dependency tree, including transitive dependencies. For Gradle, inspect resolved dependencies as well as the build scripts and repository declarations. A top-level dependency name or a license field in package metadata is a clue, not a legal conclusion; verify the license against the actual artifacts and their applicable notices.
For containers and vendor distributions
Identify the image and tag, mounted configuration, environment settings, and any vendor license configuration. A source repository may not identify the edition or runtime terms of a separately distributed binary. GridGain’s documentation, for example, describes edition-specific artifacts and license handling, including a gridgain-license.xml file for Enterprise and Ultimate and Kubernetes ConfigMap handling. Interpret search results cautiously
- A missing license file does not establish that the software is free. The terms may be embedded in an archive, supplied separately, or associated with an account.
- Finding a license file does not establish that the deployed instance is paid. Read its exact contents and identify which edition or artifact it covers.
- Repository declarations and dependency names can reveal where software comes from, but do not settle which license applies to the artifact you resolved.
How to assess commercial use, redistribution, features, and support
Once you have identified the exact software, check each project need independently. If you are comparing candidates, use the same questions for each one rather than treating “free” as a single yes-or-no property.
- License permission and conditions: Check commercial use, modification, distribution, attribution, patent terms, and any additional clauses in the license.
- Edition and feature boundary: Verify whether the functions you need—such as persistence, security, cluster operations, or management tools—are included in that edition and version.
- Support and maintenance: Distinguish community help from vendor-backed support and any stated patch commitment.
- Artifact and deployment identity: Record whether you use a source build, vendor binary, package, or container, along with its coordinates, configuration, and runtime license requirements.
- Cost scope: Consider software licensing, support, hosted services, and fees tied to your operating model separately.
What vendor examples show—and what they do not
GridGain Community Edition
GridGain’s official Community Edition License combines Apache 2.0 sections with a Commons Clause condition that restricts selling the software as defined by that license. The license text was checked on October 4, 2026. Do not infer permission for every business model from the word “Community”; read the condition and assess whether your planned activity falls within its definition.

GridGain’s licensing documentation, updated August 31, 2026, says Enterprise and Ultimate come with a 30-day trial license. That is a stated trial term, not evidence that either edition is permanently free. The same documentation and its artifacts and deployment guide show why edition clues may appear in coordinates, artifacts, and runtime configuration.
Hazelcast Community and Enterprise
Hazelcast’s versioned Hazelcast Editions and Licenses documentation describes Community as free under Apache 2.0 and its Community License, while Enterprise is a commercial offering with additional features. For Hazelcast 5.0, the documented Community capabilities include distributed computation and data structures, streaming, connectors, and SQL or predicate queries; Enterprise adds features including persistence, a security suite, and WAN replication. Check the documentation for the precise release you use before relying on these feature boundaries.

Infinispan and its support path
The Infinispan project’s community page describes Infinispan as an open-source project under Apache Public License 2.0. It also identifies Red Hat Data Grid as based on Infinispan and recommends that option for users who need a long-term stream of patches. That distinction concerns support and maintenance; it does not mean every related product or support arrangement is free. The project’s repository is another place to inspect project materials, but your resolved artifact and its terms still matter.

- Identify what is deployed. Write down the product, edition, version, artifact or image, and the dependencies actually resolved by your build.
- Collect the applicable terms. Inspect license and notice files shipped with those artifacts, and locate official licensing documentation for the same edition and release.
- Map terms to your use. Check commercial use, modification, redistribution, and any additional clauses against what your project will do.
- Confirm feature and support needs. Verify required capabilities in the versioned edition documentation, then decide separately whether community support is sufficient.
- Resolve uncertainty before relying on it. If the artifact, license scope, or a clause’s application to your deployment is unclear, obtain a qualified legal review or written clarification from the vendor.
Without a named product, version, and deployment context, there is no reliable universal yes or no. The terminal can establish useful facts about your project; the exact license and your intended use determine whether that particular data grid is free for it.
