Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has a dedicated solo campaign, World of Light, plus Classic Mode and several other single-player activities. The caveat is that combat remains the main event: World of Light adds progression and changing battle conditions, but it is not a story-led adventure built around extensive exploration.
What single-player content does Super Smash Bros. Ultimate have?
Nintendo describes Adventure Mode as “A single-player mode where you must battle to save fighters and spirits in a world that has lost everything.” Beyond that campaign, solo players can choose shorter routes, Spirit battles, training and minigames.
World of Light
World of Light is the closest thing the game has to a solo campaign. You travel across a stylized map, unlock fighters and Spirits, encounter simple puzzles, and fight battles with varying rules and conditions. TIME’s December 7, 2018 review describes how encounters can alter factors such as an opponent’s size, controls, stage conditions or the number of enemies. Those modifiers and unlocks give the campaign progression beyond selecting a standard match, but battles are still its central activity.
Classic Mode
In Classic Mode, choose a fighter and take on increasingly difficult opponents for rewards. The routes give you a more compact, character-based solo option than World of Light. Nintendo’s UK page also notes that DLC fighter packs add their own Classic Mode routes.

#1 Best Overall
- New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
- Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
- Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
- Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
- Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer
Spirit battles and collection
Spirit battles pit you against Spirit-controlled opponents under special rules and on different stages; winning gives you a chance to collect Spirits. You can build a team to improve your fighter, and Spirit types, stats and abilities can influence your approach. If you would rather not manage that layer, TIME reports that an option can select a suitable Spirit squad automatically.
Other solo activities
- Training: Practice on a stage that shows how far opponents fly.
- Mob Smash: Fight successive waves of opponents.
- Home-Run Contest: Damage a Sandbag for ten seconds, then launch it. Nintendo says this mode supports solo play as well as cooperative or turn-taking multiplayer.
- Challenger’s Approach: New fighters can appear as challengers during play. After losing, you can try a rematch from Games & More.
Nintendo also lists a single-player VR Mode that uses the Toy-Con VR Goggles from the Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit. This is an accessory-specific extra, not a core reason to buy the game.
Is the solo experience a good fit for you?
Ultimate is a stronger fit for a solo player who likes experimenting with different fighters, replaying routes, adapting to unusual battle rules and working toward unlocks. World of Light provides a campaign framework, while Classic Mode and the other activities offer ways to return for shorter bouts.
It is a weaker fit if your priority is a long, authored narrative or exploration that is not built around combat. The available descriptions establish the modes and their structure, but do not provide a dependable solo completion-time figure; there is no sound basis here for promising a particular number of hours.

What do you need to buy to play solo?
The game itself is enough for the documented core solo modes. Amiibo and DLC are optional additions, not prerequisites for World of Light, Classic Mode or the other activities.
Amiibo: optional trainable figure player
With a compatible amiibo, tap it to the right Joy-Con or Switch Pro Controller to create a figure player. Nintendo says it can learn abilities and tactics through battles, be upgraded with collected Spirits, and be sent on an internet journey to battle other amiibo. Consider one only if training a CPU-like opponent appeals to you; it is not needed for the solo modes.

DLC: optional fighters and extras
Nintendo Support says Challenger Packs 1–11 each include a fighter, stage and music. The Fighters Pass bundles group Packs 1–5 and 6–11 separately, while Piranha Plant is listed separately from those passes. Nintendo UK says the passes are also sold as retail download cards; purchasing and downloading conditions vary by region. DLC requires ownership of the game, so treat it as an optional way to get specific fighters or related extras—not as a condition for enjoying the base game’s single-player content.

- Choose Ultimate if repeated fighting-game bouts, character unlocks and Spirit customization sound satisfying, and you want both a campaign-like route and shorter solo modes.
- Temper expectations if you want the campaign to function like a conventional story-driven action-adventure game or prefer substantial non-combat exploration.
- Assess the base game first: do not add an amiibo or fighter pass to your decision unless you already want its specific training feature or content.
