It is a less suitable choice if you need a mature, low-maintenance system or guaranteed support: Ryoku is currently labeled a public beta, is based on Arch Linux, and is maintained as a spare-time community project.
What is Ryoku Linux?
Ryoku is a free, open-source Linux distribution based on Arch. It comes with a guided installer, a preconfigured Wayland desktop using Hyprland or niri, and project-specific system tools. That means you do not start with a bare Arch installation and have to assemble a desktop yourself. The project describes its goal as making the desktop usable from first boot, though that design goal does not guarantee that every new Linux user will find it straightforward. The homepage currently identifies Ryoku as a public beta. Its version and maturity may change, so check the project’s current release information before installing. A beta label is an important consideration if you depend on predictable behavior for work or other critical tasks.
Does your computer meet Ryoku’s requirements?
Ryoku’s published requirements specify x86-64 hardware and UEFI boot. Secure Boot must be disabled unless you have enrolled your own keys. The project’s repository lists these specifications:

These are the project’s published minimum and recommended specifications, not an independent compatibility test. The homepage separately describes 16 GB of RAM as comfortable; the repository specifies 8 GB as its general recommendation and 16 GB for development toolchains. Check the current requirements table rather than treating either figure as a universal threshold.
What should you check before installing?
Meeting the headline specifications does not settle every installation question. Ryoku’s hardware documentation describes cases involving storage controllers, graphics, wireless devices, firmware settings, and disk layouts. These are preparation and troubleshooting considerations, not evidence that every affected device will fail.

- Storage space: For alongside installation, the documentation gives a 2 GiB boot partition and a 20 GiB root partition as floors. Swap space increases the total required.
- Windows dual-boot: Ryoku recommends shrinking the Windows partition from within Windows before installation. A dirty or hibernated NTFS volume can prevent installation.
- Hardware and firmware: The docs include troubleshooting for Intel VMD/RST storage, NVIDIA graphics, Secure Boot, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.
- Boot mode: Confirm that the machine can boot in UEFI mode and account for the Secure Boot requirement.
Review the project’s installation hardware documentation against your own computer and disk setup before proceeding.
How installation and updates work
Installing on a new system
The documented beginner route is to boot the signed Ryoku ISO and use its guided installer. The installer handles disk partitioning and desktop installation, then reboots into Ryoku. The project also provides instructions to verify the ISO and describes its package repository as signed. Follow the current installation and verification instructions rather than assuming the installer removes the need to understand disk choices.

Updating and recovering
Ryoku documents ryoku update as the command to take a snapshot and update from the signed repository. If an update misbehaves, ryoku rollback restores the prior state. This gives users a documented recovery path; it does not establish automatic updates, an update schedule, or that updates will never cause problems. See the project’s FAQ for the current update and rollback guidance.
There is also an in-place conversion path for systems that already run Arch, but that is a separate route and is not the usual beginner installation method.

What support and stability can you expect?
Ryoku’s public-beta status means you should allow for active development and possible rough edges rather than assume the stability commitments of a long-term-support distribution. Its GitHub organization describes the project as community-first and led in spare time; it explicitly says support is not available around the clock. The project offers documentation and community participation, but the cited project materials do not establish a response-time commitment or a commercial support plan. Who is Ryoku a good fit for?
Consider Ryoku if you
- Want a complete desktop and guided installation instead of building a system from a minimal Arch setup.
- Are willing to check hardware and firmware requirements, read documentation, and troubleshoot occasional issues.
- Can accept beta software and community-based support.
Look for a different fit if you
- Need a mature system with predictable stability for a critical computer.
- Expect guaranteed access to technical support or a defined response time.
- Do not want to prepare disk partitions or investigate hardware-specific installation issues.
When weighing Ryoku against another distribution, compare maturity and release stability, how much is configured for you, hardware and firmware compatibility, installation effort, update and rollback options, and the availability of committed human support.
