Red Dead Redemption 2 is worth playing before Grand Theft Auto VI if you want a deliberate, character-led Western and are ready to spend time in its world. It is not required preparation for GTA 6: Rockstar’s official GTA VI description introduces a separate story about Jason and Lucia in Leonida, and does not identify RDR2 as a prerequisite.
Is RDR2 worth playing before GTA 6?
It depends on what you want to play while you wait. RDR2 follows Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang in 1899, near the end of the Wild West era. After a robbery goes wrong, the gang is pursued, and its internal divisions put Arthur’s ideals in conflict with loyalty. Rockstar sums up that tension this way: “As deepening internal divisions threaten to tear the gang apart, Arthur must make a choice between his own ideals and loyalty to the gang who raised him.”

That premise makes RDR2 a strong fit if you enjoy a Western setting and a story focused on its characters. If you mainly want something that feels like GTA or moves at a faster pace, it may not be the right use of your time. The appeal is its own setting and narrative, not practice for GTA VI.
Is Red Dead Redemption 2 connected to GTA 6?
Rockstar’s official GTA VI synopsis describes Jason and Lucia and their criminal story in Leonida. It says, “Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them.” The official material reviewed does not say GTA VI depends on RDR2’s story, so you do not need to play RDR2 to understand the announced setup. The two games’ descriptions point to different settings and protagonists; do not treat RDR2 as a story prequel to GTA VI.

What should you know before starting RDR2?
It is a story-first Western
Rockstar’s product description places the story in America in 1899 and centers it on Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang after the Blackwater robbery. The central tension is not simply whether the gang can escape pursuit; it is how Arthur responds as the group fractures.
Know what the edition includes
Rockstar’s PlayStation 4 store listing for the base edition includes Story Mode and Red Dead Online. Its Ultimate Edition adds bonus missions, outfits, ranks, and other items. Rockstar also lists Red Dead Online separately. Edition contents and availability can vary by platform and region, so check the current listing for the version you intend to buy rather than assuming every edition is available everywhere.

Check your platform
Rockstar’s current GTA VI page lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as its launch platforms and gives a November 19, 2026 release date. RDR2 has console and PC editions, but the Rockstar product page cited here was configured for PlayStation 4. Take-Two announced a PC release on November 5, 2019; that announcement confirms the PC version existed, not that a particular storefront currently carries it in every region. Check platform compatibility and current availability before purchasing.
Do not plan around an unverified playtime figure
No reliable playtime estimate is established here. The practical question is whether you want a substantial, deliberately paced story, rather than whether you can finish it by a particular date.

How to decide whether to play now or wait
| Choose RDR2 now if… | Wait for GTA VI if… |
|---|---|
| You want a character-led story in a historical Western setting. | You are specifically looking for a contemporary crime setting in Leonida. |
| You are comfortable investing time in a deliberately paced open-world story. | You would rather save your gaming time for GTA VI or avoid a slower narrative. |
| You have a platform-compatible RDR2 edition available to you. | Your available platform or purchase options make RDR2 inconvenient, or you are waiting for GTA VI on its announced platforms. |
Rockstar lists GTA VI for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Because release plans can change, check Rockstar’s official page for the latest date and platform information before making plans.
