NANO Nuclear’s KRONOS MMR is a separate, stationary reactor technology proposed for a University of Illinois research project. The two projects also use different power units, so their published figures are not directly comparable.
Where the shipping-container claim comes from
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) describes Project Pele as a DoD-led mobile microreactor project, with BWX Technologies (BWXT) manufacturing the prototype. DOE gives the reactor an electrical output range of 1–5 MWe and says the prototype facility is designed for transport in 20-foot shipping containers. The project is intended for demonstration and testing at Idaho National Laboratory (INL), not as a consumer generator on sale. DOE’s Project Pele announcement provides those specifications.
DOE also describes a proposed mobile-reactor demonstration at INL in its Project Pele environmental-review summary. The container and power details therefore point to Pele in the cited government material; they should not be attributed to NANO Nuclear’s KRONOS.
What NANO Nuclear’s KRONOS MMR is
KRONOS is NANO Nuclear’s stationary, high-temperature gas-cooled microreactor technology. The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has proposed a research reactor based on KRONOS. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) identifies the university as the applicant and lists the project’s power rating as 45 megawatts thermal (MWth). That is a heat-output rating, not a 45-MWe electrical rating. See the NRC KRONOS MMR project page and NANO Nuclear’s description of KRONOS.

MWth and MWe describe different quantities: thermal power is heat produced by the reactor, while electrical power is electricity output. Treating 45 MWth as 45 MWe—or as equivalent to Pele’s 1–5 MWe range—would misstate what the published figures measure.
What the licensing status means
The University of Illinois submitted its KRONOS construction permit application to the NRC on March 31, 2026. The NRC’s 2026 agency highlights record the submission, and the NRC project page shows the application in review. An application being received or reviewed is a licensing milestone; it does not mean construction is complete or the reactor is operating.

DOE’s September 2024 announcement presented Project Pele as a prototype development and demonstration effort, with schedule language describing plans and anticipated timing. That announcement does not by itself confirm later completion or establish a current operational date. The available project descriptions also do not establish that a commercial containerized unit is for sale.
