It can be, but n98-magerun2 is not automatically safe for production. It is a command-line toolkit for Magento 2, Mage-OS, and Adobe Commerce, and risk depends on the specific command, its arguments, the store and database it connects to, and the database user’s permissions. Some commands inspect data; others can change or delete it. Confirm the target and understand the command before running it on a live store.

Why production safety depends on the command

n98-magerun2 groups database, configuration, cache, and system operations in one CLI toolkit. The project documentation therefore does not support a blanket claim that every command is safe—or unsafe—to run in production. A command’s effect depends on what it does and the environment it resolves to. A mistaken working directory or database connection can turn an otherwise intended task into an operation on the wrong store.

The official n98-magerun2 project README describes its supported platform scope. For production use, check the command documentation and help for the installed version rather than assuming every option behaves identically across releases.

Commands that need particular care

Command or option Documented behavior Production consideration
db:query Executes raw SQL. The command documentation warns that queries can affect the database and says to review them before execution. --only-command prints the MySQL command without executing it. Inspect the SQL and confirm the connection and target. Use a read-only query when it fits the task. The print option is not a general dry-run for other commands.
db:drop The command documentation says it permanently deletes the current database. It prompts unless --force is used, and the configured database user needs DROP privileges. Treat it as destructive. Confirm the database identity and backup; do not bypass the prompt casually.
db:import --drop or --drop-tables The import documentation says these options remove existing data before importing and advises having backups. Verify the import file, connection, and destination. Confirm that the backup is current and restorable before replacing data.
db:maintain:check-tables --repair The table-check documentation describes a database health check and notes that repair applies only to MyISAM tables. Do not treat --repair as a general repair function or assume it applies harmlessly to every storage engine.

Preflight before running a production command

  1. Confirm the Magento root. Check the directory and instance where the CLI is running. Do not rely on the current working directory alone to establish which store or database is in scope.
  2. Read the installed version’s help and command documentation. Verify the exact command and options before execution; behavior and option names may differ by version.
  3. Establish the database target. Review the configured connection and credentials, then verify which database they point to before any database operation.
  4. Look for a supported preview. For raw SQL, db:query --only-command prints the MySQL command rather than executing it. Do not assume other commands have a dry-run mode.
  5. Check backup and recovery readiness. Before deleting or replacing data, confirm the backup is current and that the restore path is usable. The import documentation explicitly calls for backups before drop options; verifying restore readiness is an additional operational safeguard.
  6. Limit privileges to the task. The db:drop command requires DROP permission. Use only the database authority needed for the planned operation, and treat elevated permissions as consequential.
  7. Plan irreversible work. For destructive changes, use an appropriate maintenance or change window, communicate expected impact, and prepare a rollback plan. These are operational precautions, not safeguards enforced by n98-magerun2.

Install the CLI from a trusted source

The project README documents direct PHAR use and distribution through the Composer package n98/magerun2-dist. Its quick-start procedure downloads a SHA-256 checksum file and checks the PHAR against it. Following the documented integrity check helps verify the downloaded file; it does not make a particular command safe to run against a live store.

What the documentation does—and does not—establish

The official command documentation identifies specific destructive behavior and a preview option for raw SQL, but it does not provide a universal production-safety certification or establish that every command supports dry-run. Nor does it show that the tool automatically creates a backup. Check the current official documentation for the installed version and the exact command you intend to use.
