There’s no good evidence that Mercury retrograde makes phones malfunction. Mercury’s apparent backward motion is an effect of how we see the planets move from Earth, and it has no demonstrated physical mechanism for disrupting smartphone electronics. If your phone is acting up, ordinary causes such as a software bug, battery wear, a network outage, heat, moisture, or low storage are more plausible places to look.
Is Mercury retrograde making your phone glitch?
No demonstrated evidence links Mercury’s apparent retrograde motion to phone failures. Astronomer Phil Plait explains in Scientific American that there is no physical reason for Mercury’s motion—apparent or actual—to affect smartphone electronics. The article also notes that no such cosmic effect has been empirically measured.
A phone may certainly fail during a retrograde period. The timing alone, however, does not show that the planet caused it. Phones can glitch for familiar reasons, including software problems, aging batteries, network outages, heat, moisture, and storage pressure.
Is Mercury actually moving backward?
No. Mercury continues orbiting the Sun in the same direction. It only appears to move westward across the sky from Earth’s perspective as Earth and Mercury travel around the Sun at different speeds and from different positions. The apparent reversal is a change in viewing geometry, not a reversal of Mercury’s orbit.

TIME describes Mercury as appearing retrograde three to four times per Earth year, for about three weeks at a time. That is an astronomical pattern, not evidence that phones are more likely to fail during those periods.
Why can it feel as if everything is going wrong?
We notice incidents that fit the expectation
If someone expects technology to go wrong during Mercury retrograde, a dropped call or failed update is more likely to stand out and be remembered than the many uneventful times they used their phone. Scientific American identifies confirmation bias as a plausible reason the claim can feel convincing without evidence of a physical effect.

The explanation became part of popular culture
The idea’s modern reach has a cultural history. TIME reports that Mercury retrograde’s meaning broadened in the 1980s beyond a narrower horary-astrology use. Historian Nicholas Campion is quoted saying, “People started to apply it to everything.” Books, newspapers, websites, apps, and social media helped the explanation become familiar and easy to reach for when something goes wrong.
Beliefs can affect behavior without affecting electronics
A 2024 European Marketing Academy paper by Saravana Jaikumar and Bibek Guha Sarkar examined Reddit discussion and purchase datasets. It reported reduced purchases during Mercury-retrograde phases. That finding concerns behavior associated with the belief; it does not show that Mercury disrupts phones or other electronics.

What about real space weather?
Space-weather conditions can affect radio signals, but that is a separate issue from Mercury’s apparent motion. A 2026 study in Space Weather found that smartphone GNSS measurements could detect ionospheric conditions in a controlled experiment. In that experiment, smartphone carrier-phase total electron content measurements matched a reference receiver within approximately ±0.5 TECU, with RMS noise of 0.04–0.08 TECU. The study also notes that ordinary use introduces signal-quality problems. It does not link these effects to Mercury retrograde.
In other words, there are genuine ways that conditions in the space environment can matter to satellite navigation measurements. That does not establish a planetary cause for a phone freezing, losing cellular service, or failing to install an update.

What to check when your phone is acting strangely
- Connection: Check whether the issue affects Wi-Fi, cellular service, or both, and see whether other devices on the same network are affected.
- Software: Restart the phone and check for an app or operating-system update if a specific app is crashing or the problem began after an update.
- Battery and heat: Notice whether the phone shuts down unexpectedly, drains unusually fast, or becomes hot during ordinary use.
- Storage: Check whether the device is nearly full, especially if downloads, updates, or media capture are failing.
- Physical condition: Consider recent exposure to moisture, a drop, or other damage if the trouble began suddenly.
These checks do not rule out every fault, but they point toward causes that can be tested directly rather than inferred from the calendar.
