Yes, if you’re interested in god games and are comfortable with an unfinished, changing PC game. Masters of Albion’s October 1, 2026, New Beginnings update substantially reworked its opening, orders, product design, night encounters, and progression. Chapter One can be played from start to finish, but this is still Steam Early Access—not the complete game. Wait if you want a polished final release or need verified Steam Deck support.

What kind of game is Masters of Albion?

Masters of Albion is a single-player simulation and strategy game from 22cans, available on Steam for Windows PC. Its central hook is that it combines two ways of playing: you can oversee a settlement from an isometric god-game perspective, then descend into the world by possessing heroes, workers, and other characters.

The loop brings together town design and management, hiring and housing workers, running production and businesses, designing products for orders, exploring as a hero, and defending settlements at night. Its setting is an Albion reshaped by modern technology as magic returns, with the corrupting Orken Stone as a threat.

That mix matters when deciding whether the game suits you. If you mainly want hands-off city management, the possession and combat parts may be less appealing; if you want a focused action RPG, the town and production systems are a substantial part of the experience. A useful genre shorthand is god-game town management combined with hero-led fantasy exploration and defence strategy.

What does the New Beginnings update change?

Released on October 1, 2026, New Beginnings—also called version 2.0—reworks several systems that shape the opening and the recurring play loop. 22cans said the update responded to feedback about performance, repetitive nights, shallow progression, and unsatisfying interactions.

  • Opening and story: The opening is now an expanded prologue with new locations, choices, and lore.
  • Orders and product design: Random product orders have been replaced by story-led job series from different order givers, and the product-design table has been redesigned.
  • World threat: Corruption now spreads through Albion.
  • Night encounters: Encounters have objectives and lasting reward cards. Objectives can include defeating a set number of enemies, surviving for a limited time, or escorting worshippers.
  • Progression: The update changes the game’s structure and progression, rather than just adding a small batch of optional content.

For someone starting now, the practical takeaway is that version 2.0 is a materially revised Early Access experience. A March 2026 preview by PC Gamer compared the earlier pre-release design to Fable, Black & White, and Dungeon Keeper, and said combat then felt simple and needed refinement. That preview predates version 2.0, so it provides design context, not a current assessment of the updated combat.

How much content is available now?

Steam’s Early Access description says Chapter One is playable from beginning to end. That is a defined, playable chapter—not evidence that the full planned game is complete or that the final scope and release schedule are settled. 22cans estimates about 12 months in Early Access but says that timing may change.

The studio expects to open additional areas of the world while continuing to refine combat, difficulty balance, alignment, optional quests, the interface, and progression; crafting and production may also be developed further. If you buy now, expect a chapter you can complete alongside systems and content that are still subject to change, rather than a finished experience with a guaranteed full-release date.

Is it worth playing in Early Access?

The best case for playing now is specific: you like god games, enjoy switching between settlement oversight and direct character control, and are willing to see balance and other systems evolve. The October update addresses several problems identified with the launch build. After it, PC Gamer writer Robert Jones recommended the game to god-game fans while stressing that it remains far from finished; that is one reviewer’s judgment, not a review-score consensus.

Waiting makes more sense if you only want a polished full release, would rather avoid changing progression or balance, or rely on Steam Deck compatibility. Think about which loop you value most before buying: direct god-hand intervention, town and production management, hero exploration and combat, or repeated night defence. Masters of Albion combines all of them, so its appeal depends on whether that blend—not just one system—sounds enjoyable.

What to check before you buy

Version 2.0 requires a new save

A version 1.4 save cannot be loaded in version 2.0 because New Beginnings changes the game’s structure and progression. 22cans said the 1.4 branch would remain available through Steam for one month after the update. If you have a legacy save, check which branch you are launching before continuing.

PC requirements and performance

Steam lists these Windows PC requirements:

Specification Minimum Recommended
Operating system Windows 10 64-bit Windows 10/11 64-bit
Processor Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 Intel Core i5-11600 or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
Memory 8 GB RAM 16 GB RAM
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 / GTX 1660 Super or AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 or AMD Radeon RX 6600
DirectX Version 11 not stated (Steam system requirements)
Storage 20 GB 20 GB; SSD recommended

Steam cautions that stable performance is not guaranteed below minimum specifications. 22cans says its rendering and asset changes produced up to double the frame rate in its own tests, with results varying by hardware, resolution, and settings. In an October 1, 2026, PC Gamer report, Peter Molyneux said the game was averaging “between 60 and 80 frames” in the context of the studio’s target for recommended system specifications. Neither statement guarantees a particular result on your PC.

Steam Deck status

A May 5, 2026, PC Gamer report said Valve had rated the game Unsupported because its graphics settings could not be configured to run well on Deck. 22cans acknowledged that it had not met Valve’s performance threshold and said it would seek verification again after optimization. That report predates the October update; check the live Steam Deck compatibility badge before buying, since the cited status may have changed.

Mature-content disclosure

Steam’s developer-authored disclosure mentions adult language, graphic violence, alcohol use, an image of a beheaded dog, an execution choice, and crude gestures. Consider that content if you are choosing the game for a younger player or are sensitive to those depictions.
