Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOften, yes—but only if the older phone’s like-for-like price is meaningfully lower, its remaining software support fits how long you plan to keep it, and its battery, condition, warranty, and return terms check out. There is no universal discount that makes every previous-generation flagship a good buy: the exact model, storage, market, seller, and offer matter.
How to decide whether the savings are worth it
Compare the previous-generation phone with a current model at the same storage capacity and with similar unlocked or carrier-locked status. Include the seller, condition, warranty, and return window in the comparison; a lower headline price can be offset by a weaker warranty or a device that needs a battery replacement.
There is no defensible general discount threshold without knowing the country, exact models, and actual offers. The practical question is whether the total price difference compensates you for any shorter support runway, condition risk, or missing features that matter to you.
Check software support for the exact phone
Find the official security and operating-system support commitment for the precise device you are considering, then compare its remaining support with your intended ownership period. Do not infer an end date from the brand or launch year alone: support can vary by model. A phone that is cheaper today may be a poor fit if its official update runway ends before you expect to replace it.

- Memory: 128GB internal storage and 8GB RAM for plenty of apps and files.
- Connectivity: 5G capable with support for GSM, CDMA, and Wi-Fi networks.
- Battery: 4000mAh battery provides all-day power for your daily needs.
Include battery and condition in the cost
For a used or renewed phone, check battery health or the seller’s battery-replacement coverage, inspect the stated condition, and read the return and warranty terms before buying. A low price is less compelling if the battery is worn, the repair history is unclear, or returning a problem device is difficult.
Samsung describes its Certified Re-Newed phones as including “100% genuine Samsung parts, a certified new battery and IMEI number, 1-year warranty, thorough inspection and cleaning by Samsung technicians, and supported with the latest software updates.” This describes Samsung’s program; it should not be assumed to apply to other refurbished listings. Compare the features you will actually use
Look at the specific differences between the two phones: camera capabilities, display, battery life, size, performance, or newer software features. A newer model is not automatically worth the extra cost if its changes do not affect your everyday use. Conversely, a feature you rely on can justify paying more even when the previous-generation phone remains capable.
Consider resale only as a secondary factor
Swappa’s June 29, 2026 marketplace analysis reports first-year depreciation of around 28–33% for a typical iPhone, 47–66% for Samsung Galaxy S flagships, and 60–72% for Google Pixel phones. Those ranges reflect Swappa’s marketplace data and calculation; they are not universal forecasts for an individual handset or a guarantee of what it will sell for later. Treat local resale or trade-in estimates as uncertain supporting information, not the deciding factor. Swappa’s 2026 depreciation analysis

Use this checklist before you buy
- Compare the same model configuration and storage, with equivalent unlocked or carrier-locked status.
- Calculate the total price from comparable sellers and offers, including any likely battery or repair cost.
- Verify remaining official software support for the exact model against your planned ownership period.
- Confirm condition, battery health or replacement coverage, repair history, warranty scope, and return window.
- Check that the specific camera, display, performance, battery, size, or software differences match your priorities.
- Use local trade-in and resale prices as estimates, not promises.
What to verify on a previous-generation listing
The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra is one example of a previous-generation flagship to compare, not a recommendation for every buyer. Confirm the listing is for the intended model and is available in your region; then check storage, lock status, seller, condition, warranty, and return terms. Samsung’s renewed-device program is one possible route, but its availability for this particular model must be confirmed separately. Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra
