Japan has residential fiber plans advertised at up to 10Gbps, but availability depends on the address and provider. Current official examples list prices in yen, with contract and equipment conditions that matter as much as the headline speed.
What the $55 claim gets right—and wrong
Some Japanese providers offer home fiber with a maximum advertised access speed of up to 10Gbps. That is a real service tier, but it is not a single nationwide rollout: providers restrict availability to eligible areas, and NTT East is expanding its network in stages.
The official prices cited here are in yen, not dollars. Since the headline does not identify a plan or exchange-rate date, its $55 conversion cannot be verified from those price listings. Treat it as an unconfirmed conversion, not a guaranteed current monthly bill.
What two provider plans cost
| Provider and plan | Published price and conditions | Availability and equipment |
|---|---|---|
| SoftBank Hikari 10Gbps | ¥6,930 per month for the detached-house plan with two-year automatic renewal. This includes the required Home Gateway (S), listed at ¥550 per month. SoftBank says the basic monthly charge will rise by ¥330 from December 1, 2026 for eligible renewal contracts; the effective month depends on renewal timing. | Available only in certain areas. SoftBank specifies compatible computer, router, and network equipment, with Cat6A-or-higher LAN cable for smooth 10Gbps connectivity. |
| Docomo Hikari 10-giga, Type A | ¥6,380 per month after the campaign. The page also advertises a conditional introductory basic charge of ¥500 per month for up to six months for qualifying new signups on a two-year contract; this is not the ongoing price. | Available only in some areas. A compatible router is required; Docomo lists router rental at ¥550 per month. |
These are provider-specific examples, not a like-for-like nationwide price ranking. Compare the ongoing charge, promotion eligibility and duration, required gateway or router rental, contract and cancellation terms, and address eligibility before choosing.

How to check whether 10Gbps is available at your address
- Use the provider’s official service-availability checker and enter the exact installation address. A general statement that service exists in a city or prefecture does not establish eligibility for a particular building.
- Check the result for the specific 10-giga or 10Gbps plan, not merely for the provider’s standard fiber service.
- Confirm any building-specific installation requirements and the contract terms, including the required equipment and whether the listed price applies to your home type.
NTT East announced staged expansions of its Flets Hikari Cross approximately symmetrical 10Gbps access service in additional prefectures and municipalities, scheduled from December 2025 through March 2026. The announcement anticipates further expansion, with details to be announced when settled; it does not establish nationwide availability.
Does a 10Gbps plan deliver 10Gbps to your device?
No. “Up to 10Gbps” describes a technical maximum for the access service, not a promise that a computer will receive 10Gbps. Actual throughput depends on the provider’s best-effort service conditions, network congestion, equipment, and the connection between the router and device. A slower port, router, or cable can bottleneck the connection even when the fiber plan supports a higher maximum.

What equipment does a home need?
- Provider gateway or router: Check whether the plan requires a particular gateway or offers equipment rental. SoftBank’s cited detached-house price includes its required Home Gateway (S); Docomo lists compatible-router rental separately.
- Router and device ports: The router’s WAN/LAN ports and the computer’s Ethernet adapter must support the speed you want to use. A 10Gbps service cannot make a 1Gbps port operate at 10Gbps.
- Ethernet cable: SoftBank’s guide calls for Cat6A or higher for smooth 10Gbps connectivity. The whole wired path—not just the cable—needs compatible equipment.
SoftBank’s service guide puts the practical requirement plainly: “To enjoy smooth 10 Gbps and 2.5 Gbps connectivity, you will need a compatible computer, router, and network equipment, as well as a Category 6A or higher LAN cable.”
What about Japan’s announced 25Gbps service?
NTT East announced Flets Hikari 25G, with service starting March 31, 2026. It is an operator-specific access service, not evidence that 25Gbps is available everywhere in Japan. NTT East describes it as best effort, says customers need a separate ISP contract for internet access, and requires customers to provide a router. The 25Gbps figure is an approximate maximum access speed, not a measured household result.

Bottom line on the headline
Japan does have residential fiber plans advertised at up to 10Gbps, but availability is address-specific and actual device speeds can be lower. Official examples include SoftBank at ¥6,930 per month for a specified detached-house contract and Docomo at ¥6,380 per month after a campaign, with different equipment and promotion conditions. The cited official sources do not verify a universal $55 monthly price.
