For most people, it is safer to leave Microsoft Defender SmartScreen on. SmartScreen checks the reputation of websites and apps or downloads for known unsafe content. Turning off a SmartScreen control removes that layer of protection in the area it covers. If it blocks a file, verify the file and its source instead of disabling protection broadly.
What SmartScreen protects—and what it does not
Microsoft describes SmartScreen as reputation-based protection for URLs and apps or downloads. It can warn about or block content associated with known risks. A warning is a prompt to investigate: it does not, by itself, prove that a file is malware, and the absence of a warning does not establish that a file is safe.
SmartScreen is separate from Microsoft Defender Antivirus real-time protection. They are different security controls; antivirus protection does not make SmartScreen redundant, and SmartScreen does not replace antivirus. Microsoft documents the distinction between its reputation-based protection and antivirus features in its Microsoft Defender SmartScreen overview.
Which SmartScreen setting are you considering?
There is not just one universal SmartScreen switch. Windows app and file reputation checks and Microsoft Edge website and download checks are separate controls. Changing one may leave the other enabled.

| Control | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Windows app and file checks | Reputation checks for apps and files, including downloaded items. |
| Microsoft Edge SmartScreen | Warnings and protection for phishing and malicious websites and downloads in Edge. |
Labels and available settings can vary with Windows version, edition, browser, and administrator policy. Microsoft’s available SmartScreen settings documentation treats Windows shell and Edge policy settings separately. Microsoft Support also describes the Edge control and how to turn it on or off in its guide to SmartScreen protection in Microsoft Edge.
What to do when SmartScreen blocks an app or file
- Identify the warning. Determine whether it came from a website, an Edge download, or a Windows app or file check. This helps you avoid changing a different control from the one that raised the warning.
- Verify the source and file. Confirm that you obtained the download from the developer’s genuine official site. Check that the publisher and file are what you expected. If you cannot verify them, do not bypass the warning.
- Check Protection History. Open the Windows Security app and review Protection History for the relevant event. Microsoft says SmartScreen blocks for potentially unwanted apps can appear there. Its Protection History guidance describes allowing an item when you conclude a block was mistaken; after allowing it, you must download the item again.
- Keep the decision narrow. If you have verified a file and decide to proceed, address that specific block rather than turning off a broader SmartScreen control. Do not treat a warning as something to dismiss without checking.
Can you turn SmartScreen off on a work or school PC?
On an organization-managed device, an administrator may enforce SmartScreen settings or prevent users from changing them. If a setting is unavailable or switches back, policy may be controlling it. Microsoft recommends enabling SmartScreen in organizational deployments and configuring protections to prevent bypasses of high-risk warnings. Its policy guidance notes: “By default, Microsoft Defender SmartScreen allows users to bypass warnings, which allows users to continue to an unsafe site or run an unsafe file, even after being warned.”

Turning off a SmartScreen control is not the same as turning off all security protection, but it does remove the reputation checks provided by that control. Because Windows and Edge have distinct SmartScreen settings, the effect depends on which one you disable. For ordinary use, leave the protections on and investigate individual warnings. Only make a specific exception when you have verified the source and understand what the warning is telling you.
