Yes—when your headset supports it, mirroring its view to a phone is an intended sharing feature, not a special physical hazard by itself. The main considerations are keeping headset use physically safe, sharing only with a destination you intend, and following instructions for your exact headset. Casting does not remove the ordinary risks of wearing a VR headset.
What mirroring does—and what it does not do
Mirroring or casting sends the headset wearer’s displayed view to a selected receiving device, such as a phone. That lets someone watch what the wearer sees. It also means the view is no longer confined to the headset: anyone with access to the receiving phone may be able to see it.
Official guidance describes this as a sharing feature; it does not establish a special physical danger caused by sending the view to a phone. The wearer still needs to use the headset safely, and the receiving device and network should be ones they intend to use.
Does every VR headset cast to a phone?
No. Support, compatible phones, apps, network requirements, sharing indicators, and protected-content restrictions vary by headset and software version. Do not assume that instructions for one platform apply to another.

For Vision Pro’s compatible devices and software requirements, use Apple’s view-mirroring instructions. For Quest, Meta’s cited comfort and safety resource describes the feature but is dated 2022, so its old app name and menu instructions should not be treated as guaranteed current.
How to keep the play area safe while someone watches
A person watching a phone is not a substitute for a clear play area, the headset’s boundary safeguards, or the wearer’s awareness of their surroundings. Meta explains that passthrough can help users notice the physical environment, but is not equivalent to natural human vision and does not replace boundary safety mechanisms.

- Clear hazards from the headset user’s play area and use the headset’s boundary or guardian features.
- Do not rely on a phone watcher to prevent collisions or notice every hazard for the wearer.
- Keep the phone and its operator outside the wearer’s movement area unless the wearer has paused and is aware of them.
Meta’s developer guidance says, “Passthrough allows users to have more awareness of the physical environment; however, it is not equivalent to natural human vision.” It also says, “Importantly, however, neither scene nor passthrough is a substitute for the safety mechanisms provided by the boundary.”
When the wearer should stop
Mirroring does not make it sensible to continue playing through discomfort. Apple’s Vision Pro guidance lists dizziness, disorientation, nausea, headache, fatigue, and sweating among possible symptoms. If symptoms occur, stop using the headset. Apple advises waiting until they have subsided and the wearer feels fully reoriented before doing activities that require balance, coordination, spatial awareness, or attention, including driving. Persistent or severe symptoms warrant medical advice. These are Apple’s manufacturer recommendations for Vision Pro, not a diagnosis or a universal medical rule for every headset.

Apple also recommends getting used to Vision Pro gradually and taking regular breaks. Its example of starting with short 20- or 30-minute sessions is an adjustment suggestion, not a proven safe exposure limit for everyone. See Apple’s Vision Pro comfort guidance and motion-sickness guidance.

The selected receiving device displays the headset view, so share only to a phone or other destination you trust and intend to use. On Vision Pro, the green indicator and pulsing white EyeSight light signal that mirroring is active. Indicators differ by platform, so do not assume another headset provides the same notice.

Meta says Quest users can manage privacy settings in the Meta Horizon app and headset. Check the controls for your specific model, and be mindful when casting to a shared device or using a shared network; mirroring should not be treated as private from everyone who may have access to either.

Before you start
- Confirm compatibility. Check the manufacturer’s current support page for your headset, phone, app, and software versions.
- Check the destination and connection. Make sure the receiving device and network are intended. For Vision Pro, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be enabled on both devices, and both must use the same Wi-Fi network. Quest requirements should be confirmed in current Meta support guidance.
- Prepare the play area. Clear hazards and use the headset’s boundary safeguards; a person watching the phone is not a replacement.
- Check that sharing is active—and stop it when finished. Use the headset’s own sharing indicators and controls. On Vision Pro, look for the green indicator and pulsing white EyeSight light while mirroring is active.
