Usually, no. Don’t bypass an unresolved browser certificate warning—especially before signing in, paying, or sharing private information. The browser could not validate the secure connection it expected, and clicking through does not fix the cause or prove the site is trustworthy.
What bypassing an SSL warning means
A browser certificate warning means it could not validate the certificate presented for the connection. The problem may be with the website, your device, or the network between them; the warning alone does not identify which one. Continuing past it removes the browser’s protection at that point, so information you send may be exposed or delivered to an unintended party.
For Chrome, messages such as “Your connection is not private” and codes including NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID, ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID, and ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID indicate a certificate or connection validation problem. Google lists causes such as an inaccurate device clock, an unrecognized or self-signed certificate, an expired or corrupted certificate, or a certificate name that does not match the website address. See Google Chrome Help: Get help with common error messages in Chrome and Google Search Console Help: SSL certificate problems.
Tell a certificate warning from a dangerous-site warning
A red Safe Browsing interstitial is different from a certificate error. It means Chrome has flagged the site for unsafe behavior, such as phishing or malware. Google advises users not to use a dangerous page if possible and not to enter personal information on it. Don’t treat either warning as a routine nuisance or assume that an exception makes the site safe. For Chrome’s connection and unsafe-site guidance, see Check if a site’s connection is secure – Computer.

How to work out where the problem is
Use the warning wording and the pattern of affected devices and connections as clues, not as proof that bypassing is safe. Note the exact error code, then check whether the issue affects one site or many, one network or several, and one device or multiple devices. Also consider whether you are on public Wi-Fi or using a VPN, proxy, or managed work or school network. These distinctions help identify whether to investigate the device, network, or site.
Safe troubleshooting steps
- Check your device clock. Verify the date, time, and time zone, and correct them if they are wrong. An inaccurate clock can make a valid certificate appear invalid.
- Complete public Wi-Fi sign-in. A Wi-Fi network may require portal sign-in before normal browsing works. Open a plain HTTP page to prompt the network’s sign-in page, then complete the portal process and retry.
- Test a private window and update the operating system. In Chrome, try an Incognito window. If the site works there, investigate browser extensions that may be interfering. Also install available operating system updates.
- Check HTTPS-scanning security software carefully. Some security products inspect encrypted traffic and can interfere with browser security. Follow the vendor’s documented diagnostic steps; restore protection afterward rather than leaving it disabled.
- Ask an administrator about managed networks. A work or school HTTPS-intercepting proxy can cause an authority error if its certificate is missing or not installed correctly. Ask the network administrator to check the proxy and certificate. Google warns: “It isn’t recommended that you install a certificate on your own, as it’s usually a security risk.”
- Contact the site owner if only one site remains affected. After checking your device and network, report the error to the site owner. The site may need to replace its certificate or correct its configuration.
What to do while the warning remains
Do not enter passwords, payment details, or other sensitive information on the warned page. If the warning is a Safe Browsing interstitial, avoid using the page if possible. If a certificate warning appears on a site you need, stop and use a verified contact method to ask the site owner or, on a managed network, your administrator to investigate. Clicking through is not a repair and does not establish that the website is trustworthy.
