No—if an invitation looks suspicious, do not accept, decline, or mark it tentative. An RSVP can notify the organizer, and security guidance warns that a malicious sender may use a response to confirm your email address is active. Avoid any links, attachments, or phone numbers in the event. If it might be legitimate, verify it separately before responding.
Why you should not RSVP to a suspicious invitation
Calendar software can send the organizer a notification when you respond. Google Calendar states, “When you respond to an invitation, the organizer gets a notification.” Security guidance from the University of Hawaiʻi and KnowBe4 warns that a response may also signal to a malicious sender that your address is active. Because provider behavior and settings can vary, this is a cautious security default—not a claim that every calendar service sends every decline to an attacker.
Do not use Accept, Decline, Maybe, or an RSVP link in an invitation you have not verified. A familiar calendar interface does not prove the event is genuine. Be especially wary of pressure to act, requests for passwords or one-time codes, and unexpected links, attachments, or phone numbers.
What to do with an unexpected calendar invitation
- Leave the RSVP untouched. Do not accept, decline, mark tentative, or use an RSVP link while the invitation is suspicious.
- Do not interact with its contents. Avoid opening links or attachments and do not call numbers listed in the event.
- Verify it independently if it could be real. Contact the person or organization through a number you already trust, a saved contact, or its official website reached independently. If it appears to come from someone you know, confirm by another route, such as a known phone number or text conversation. Do not rely on contact details in the invitation.
- Report or remove it using your provider’s controls. Use the calendar’s junk or spam option when available. If the invitation arrived as an email message, use the email provider’s phishing-reporting control.
- Respond only after verification. Once you have confirmed who sent it and why, accept, decline, or mark tentative according to your plans.
How to report or remove it by provider
Google Calendar
Google’s spam-reporting option applies to events sent from Google Calendar; it is not available for events created by another provider or app. On a computer, open the event, select More actions, then Report as spam. Reporting removes the event; if it is recurring, Google says the entire series is removed.

To limit invitations being added automatically, go to Settings > General > Event settings > Add invitations to my calendar and choose Only if the sender is known. Google defines known senders as contacts, people in your organization, or people you have interacted with. Google cautions that this setting might reveal to senders that they are not in your contacts, so weigh that privacy trade-off against the convenience of automatic additions. Apple iCloud Calendar
Apple’s iCloud guidance provides a Report Junk option for unwanted or suspicious invitations in Mail or Calendar. Apple says reporting junk automatically deletes that invitation from calendars on devices signed in to the same Apple Account. If the problem is a spam calendar subscription rather than an invitation, delete the subscription. Apple iCloud User Guide: Report junk invitations and events.

Apple also advises against following links or opening or saving attachments in suspicious or unsolicited messages. Apple Support: Recognize and avoid social engineering schemes.
Microsoft Outlook and other email services
If the suspicious invitation came as an email, treat it as a potentially fraudulent message rather than relying on the RSVP controls. In Outlook, Microsoft describes using Report > Report phishing for suspicious messages, then deleting them. Menu wording can vary by Outlook version or account. If you are unsure whether a message is real, Microsoft recommends checking through contact information found independently on an official website or in trusted records. Watch for invitations that imitate event services
Some fake digital invitations try to make an RSVP seem urgent and ask for an email password or passcode. The FTC’s May 2026 consumer alert describes this specific scam pattern and advises recipients not to click and to verify with the host. It does not mean every unexpected invitation is fraudulent, but a request for login credentials or a one-time code is a strong reason to stop and verify independently. Stolen credentials can be used to take over an account and send further scam messages. FTC Consumer Alert: That party invite might be a scam.

- If you entered a password: Change it, along with any reused passwords, and enable multifactor authentication.
- If it was a work or school account: Notify your organization’s IT team, especially if you entered credentials or a code.
- If you shared financial or other sensitive details: Contact the relevant bank, service, or organization using contact information from its official site or trusted records.
Microsoft recommends noting what information you shared, changing affected and reused passwords, enabling multifactor authentication, and telling work or school IT when relevant. Apple’s guidance is to presume an unexpected request for personal information, a security code, or money may be a scam and contact the company directly if needed.
